Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Hasn't that been the right-wing Putin-sponsored narrative all along - throwing Ukraine under the bus so that Russia doesn't get desperate and start a nuclear war?

[–] Polaris@jlai.lu 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Like, they can't even handle Ukraine alone currently, what are they going to do in the Baltic States ?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 16 hours ago

they fully expected ukraine to be theres in weeks when they firstinvaded, they are in too deep now, because st petersberg and moscowvites will see weakness in putin and would want to replace him asap.

You want to fill your hole with nato servicemen?

Gottem

[–] Itizaj@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago
[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

filled with NATO seamen.

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Putin's insistence on doing frequent airspace violations over Gotland is like half the reason we pursued joining Nato in the first place. That started way back. Ukraine just tipped the scales over enough to cause us to take action on it.

Sweden used to pride itself on wanting to stay neutral, but that's quite a bit harder to sustain when someone with significantly higher military power keeps harassing you.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Putin likely gets 2nd hand info. if he had stuck to his troll farm/propaganda machine and fun far right only. ukraine would be theirs eventually. i think he got nervous when the last president fled ukraine.

[–] ivan@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's not unique to him. China would've eventually had Taiwan without a fuss if not for how they dealt with Hong Kong.

But alas, authoritarian inflexibility and insecurity force morons at the helms of modern empires to do dumbest shit to pursue ephemeral glories.

I‘m confused, you talking about Trump, Starmer, Merz, Meloni and Macron?

[–] jumjummy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh look, an ml user coming in to deflect off someone mentioning China in a bad light. Shocking.

[–] doben@lemmy.ml -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you'd had some reading comprehension, you'd realize that I did no such thing.

[–] jumjummy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Thread above mentions China and Taiwan, which probably triggered your keyword search and you jumped in with “are you talking about these western leaders?”

How exactly did I not comprehend what you were saying?

[–] LeoDalPozzo@infosec.pub 1 points 1 day ago

How to push an entire continent to war. We never learn

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago

...they were not desperate already?

I suppose it is true that desperation has no limit

[–] oats@piefed.zip 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Clickbaity article title, they are talking about Gotland

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

"Baltic Sea island" is clearer than "Gotland".

[–] oats@piefed.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, good thing there are just about 250 thousand Swedish islands in the Baltic.

Makes it much clearer than just stating which of those.

Joking aside, a good title would just include "the Swedish Baltic island Gotland ..."

But then people wouldn't need to click, as everyone knew the Russians pull the same shit they did during the cold war, again.

[–] Wrongdoer2@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago (4 children)

If they do it's more likely they nuke something no?

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

The fact that russia supposedly has more nukes than the USA but spends only 1/12 of the budget of the US on their nuclear war heads maintainance, and seeing in what state the Moskova Flagship, was in, and their army, i am more frightened of the state of their nukes than their nukes themself

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago (3 children)

No they want these strategic positions

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Is this why they shell a nuclear power plant? Who knows what Putin wants anymore.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

With which fleet should they be able to conquer it? How can they maintain a supply line to hold it?

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago (16 children)

Don't look for reason among the Russians

That's hardly "desperate". It's more opportunistic, than anything else.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No. That would make Putin an instant pariah. He wants his little toy army to fight NATO's little toy army before he dies.

[–] Wrongdoer2@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 days ago (2 children)

We're talking about he becoming desperate here.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Russia is not under threat from the West. Only its government is. Putin knows this. Starting a nuclear war would not help him; it would expedite his downfall.

[–] variaatio@nord.pub 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Whatever desperation Putin has before using Nukes it is nothing compared to how desperate his situation would be after. It is not west he needs to be concerned then. It is India and China. Both have made clear Nukes are not to be used.

Russian economy would collapse, if China and India cut ties. Not to mention China might just walk over the eastern border and come clean house with and in Russia for their insolence of not heeding Peking. It's 140 million person country vs. 1 billion person country and PLA isn't any more the "every third guy gets actual rifle" people's resistance army.

He would put himself and most likely his family and children at risk. Since using nukes like that is the level of thing where ruthless country like China absolutely would come for the culprit and their family. Since "you might not care about your life anymore old man, but we are pretty sure you care about your children and grand children".

Medieval (quite literally). "Yeah, we snatched your grand child as hostage." You behave now and they might life.

Brutal? Yes. Morally right? No. Morally right to pretend you would do the whole time, but you wouldn’t actually do it? Absolutely, yes.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Once the nukes start flying, morally right becomes less of a concern.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, but it’s also of no use once the nukes have been deployed. Then it’s just spite, which is understandable, but way less helpful.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

At this scale it wouldn't be literally the end of the world, but it would be terrible for everyone.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

he better upgrade his ural Mountain compound or his reinforced palaces, his 750mil superyacht wont help him.
