Flight of the Navigator is a 1986 American science-fiction adventure film directed by Randal Kleiser and written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton, and Phil Joanou. In 1978, a 12-year-old boy named David Freeman falls into a ravine and wakes up to discover it is 1986. He hasn't aged a day, but eight years have passed on Earth. They notice brainwave anomalies in David and realize he is neurologically linked to the ship. The ship downloads David's personality and memories, changing its programming into a humorous, erratic, and conversational robot named Max. Together, David and Max escape from the NASA base.
Flight of the Navigator officially entered Soviet theater distribution on January 2, 1990. It was fully dubbed into Russian by state-approved voice actors. It became an absolute box-office smash, with reports suggesting over 30 million Soviet citizens bought tickets to see it. Rumors claims that Flight of the Navigator was deliberately singled out, approved, and heavily broadcast by Soviet state censors because it featured an American government agency (NASA) as the central antagonist.
