As an engineering manager, I must protest.

My job (when not still doing technical work) is just to handle stupid paperwork, make sure my reports are happy with what they're working on... and make sure senior corporate asshats leave them the fuck alone.

I exist to make sure my reports never get surprised and make sure that the awesome shit they do is properly acknowledged.

If you have been gaining experience in the IT industry as a developer and have good hands-on experience on various issues that appear in any kind of application then you should consider moving higher in the corporate hierarchy.

Or, you know, keep doing what your enjoy and stay a developer.
