Yeah it's definitely in the range of just building a box and installing steam OS, maybe even of buying a pre-built and installing steam OS, that said I still find their efforts very commendable. I know they wanted to be cheaper but it's tough with the current hardware market.

Nice ~~title~~ bait

Just not a good time to buy anything with memory in it but especially computers. I had hoped for around half this price but it makes sense in light of the AI crunch on the industry.

That said they'll probably still sell out to at least a speculative market trying to flip these things.

Always said it would be around $1000. If I wanted to be petty, I'd have saved the comments of people who said no way it would be over $700-800, but I don't.

A lot of people said it wouldn't be DOA at $1000 though.

Japan prices

  • ¥189,980 512GB -- SOLD OUT
  • ¥204,980 512GB Steam Controller
  • ¥249,980 2TB -- SOLD OUT
  • ¥264,980 2TB + Steam Controller -- SOLD OUT

At the median salary (gross of roughly 5 million JPY), the only one not sold out is roughly 2/3 of a month's take-home pay. Assuming it's not scalpers or overseas buyers (not sure what, if any protections there are on the site), it certainly seems people here are interested (unless the ONLY model they actually sell here is the one not sold out, which happens occasionally such as with Pixel phones only offering certain, lower-spec varieties).

Edit: Also not sure if the JP, Taiwan, and HK stock are pooled which could certainly throw things.

Not saying you're wrong but the Japanese market is a special place for gaming products. I wouldn't necessarily project sales in Japan to the global market.

Already got shills disliking the truth

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago

the truth that we have a chip shortage thanks to stupid demands of AI datacenters? Yeah it really fecking hurts everyone and drives the prices for computer components up like no tomorrow.

Shit title, try harder

Bare bones model will be over $1500 in Canada. I think they'll sell out their first run, but will have trouble moving later inventory.

They did mentioned that this first batch will be a limited run due to the price of ram, they're likely gonna drop the price in the future i guess.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Do you think RAM is going to get cheaper? I admire your optimism.

[–] anamethatisnt@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

New chinese DRAM makers like CXMT are already being used to create DDR5 RAM. They will keep growing production until the prices fall.
I think we'll see falling prices sometime late next year to be honest.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't know, if RAM does get cheaper then i guess they will drop the price, if not then it won't. Not sure why you have to be so smug about it as if we all know what the future will be

Not smug; pessimistic.
