I had hella technical issues with this game.

  • Don't use external framerate limiters. YMMV. EDIT: I turned my RTSS FPS limiter back on to 60FPS and now it works perfectly...I don't understand anything anymore.
  • Disable VSync and make sure it's not forced from your GPU's control panel
  • You can't fix the stutters in the city. At least not as far as I can tell.
  • VRR / Freesync / GSync may give you issues as well, if your PC can handle the game you can probably just turn them off for this game only.
  • Don't switch to DX12 using the advanced graphics settings. It makes things WORSE. Use Vulkan.
  • Generally don't touch those advanced settings. Idk why they're even there if they break the game so much.
  • Make sure Windows didn't install a GPU driver that doesn't even exist yet via Device Manager. Fuck Windows btw.
  • You can't play the game without internet if you get it...officially. FYI. Do with this as you will.

I hope I saved you some headache. It took me getting all the way to 40% completion to figure out all this.

Game's awesome but the technical BS kinda ruins it.

EDIT: Also why the hell is every cougar that spawns a 1 star? Every time I find one, I scope it, and I see 1/3, god damn, I've found like 7 by now and ALL have been 1 star. It's getting to the point I'm not even bothering to kill them. I just want a nice outfit damnit.

I plan on finally playing the game soon. Right now I'm busy with Final Fantasy Remakes. After that there are a few other games waiting in the pipeline. To be honest, I somehow think RDR2 looks boring, and I'm sorry if anyone likes the game and is reading this. It just doesn't appeal to me from what I have seen. However... this is a landmark game and that alone is a reason to play it, so I know if its good or bad and why that is. Also, who knows, maybe I was wrong. Lot of your suggestions does not apply to my system probably, because I'm on Linux.

Make sure Windows didn’t install a GPU driver that doesn’t even exist yet via Device Manager. Fuck Windows btw.

I will make sure this won't happen, by not installing Windows. I use Arch* btw.

It's a really pretty game that gives you a small taste of what it must've been like to be a roaming varmint in the early days of the US.

The missions feel very much on rails IMO. Several have just felt to me like a shooting gallery at a funfair.

I admittedly haven't got very far - maybe 25% - and what put me off a bit was how the game handles a bounty on your head. Bounty hunters seem to spawn randomly near you, and have supernatural abilities to home in on you. I tried sneaking up on them to pick them off one by one, but that just triggers more and more to spawn in. It really seemed like the GTA "Wanted" mechanic with increasing stars, and it kinda killed the immersion for me.

I played on PC specifically for a mod that ensure animal pelts are high stars, as long as you don't destroy it with guns

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm really trying not to mod it but I've spent 3 days of free time looking for cougar pelts and I may just break lol

I also got one that allowed running in camp, but otherwise vanilla

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 22 hours ago

I also have an urge to get that but I look so damn silly running around everywhere lol.

Hell, I even look silly doing the medium run by just tapping shift haha

Rockstar and shoddy PC ports. Name a more iconic combo.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't even think it's just Rockstar. Every PC port I've ever played had some sort of blatant technical issue.

From what I've heard it's always games ported from console to PC as well, never the other way around, at least according to people I know that have consoles.

We just have to get the short end of the stick because we don't shill out money for crazy amounts of sales for mediocre yearly release games like Fifa.

Activision had some horrible ports, like Aspyr making a GH:WT port that got fixed with the Definitive Edition mod. Some Call of Duty games had horrible ports as well (World at War and Black Ops 1 come to mind).

I gave that up along with soy sauce years ago.

What is the reason to turn off Vsync and VRR ?

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

The game stutters like shit with Vsync on for whatever reason. Maybe FreeSync was interfering, I have no idea.

the post is about windows tho

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

Doesn't hurt to add additional information for non Windows users, who opened up this thread. Even the original post says "fuck Windows". Also playing those games on Linux over Proton is actually running the Windows version. So its not entirely offtopic.

Troubleshooting a game, I suppose "Use Linux because it just works" is the point.

[–] CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Tbh, it worked really well on Linux. I played for 2 hours and... whispers in hushed tones... got bored. Please don't lynch me.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Yea I see how you can get bored tbh. A lot of the game is really slow. Playing it after work like I do, you barely get anything done and it's easy to get frustrated.

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's a good one 🤣

Wtf does OP expect me to do? Replace windows just to play a game?

I want to migrate to Linux dual boot but for now it's not happening.

I'd expect more sense from a linux user. Just posting an image I have no concept of is just an insult to me.

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Take your time and start using Linux when you think it is ready. Because lets face it, you will encounter problems, learn new concepts or tools along the way. It just takes time to start with Linux and using it longtime. From personal experience I can say that dual boot is probably the worst thing you can do. Then you have to manage two different operating systems, one is always out of date, because you mainly use one of them. And they work differently. I recommend on installing Linux on a dedicated drive, not partitioning your Windows drive. This is much safer and more flexible. But with current economy this is difficult now, as prices are very high for new drives... Good luck.

I don't understand the reasoning why you feel offended by that. Doesn't look like any form of insult to me, but to be honest I don't understand the original intend anyway.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I know Linux well enough already but I just haven't had time to migrate my personal pc to it...

And I have to spend a billion on a new SSD... And I have shit motherboard that only supports one M.2 drive...

All in all it's going to be a pain in the ass and expensive so I haven't bothered yet... I don't even know if I will at this point. I've been putting it off for a very long time.

Also giving up windows is quite literally not an option for me. I'm platform locked because of work. I need it either in dual boot or on a separate drive.

Thanks. Had no idea what the image implied.
