The algae multiplied. Who could have predicted they would do that? It was an entirely novel strategy.

[–] Town@lemmy.zip 14 points 3 weeks ago

I don't know what you mean, he stopped testing and the numbers went down.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

This damn single celled organism is just far too intelligent for the trump administration.

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

How could algae have learned to multiply? We're eliminating the department of education to prevent problems like this from reoccurring in the future.

The other bodies of water in this picture are what interest me. Both the Pond and the Tidal Basin look bluer, showing what it would have looked like. Now it's the color of grift.

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

They're probably also deeper, which both provides a less ideal environment for algae to grow and also looks bluer despite algae that might be growing. The water in the tidal basin is also moving and has water naturally flowing in and out. The reflecting pool does not have that and needs to be shallow so that water movement is minimized to create the reflection it's supposed to give.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Yes the Basin is more "wild," fair enough.

The Pond is also shallow and manmade, with a similar water system, so it's a truer comparison.

I’d rather vote for the algae too

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

At least Algae is useful.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 27 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Next week these idiots will be saying "It's supposed to be green" so that dont have to admit they voted for a fool.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Why would they wait until next week?

Algae produce a shitload of oxygen, so it's super eco-friendly

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago

i guess that’s 1 way to get him to do whatever it takes to change it

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 3 weeks ago

except it causes a feedback, eutrophication effect. teh algae dieback, and the consumption of oxygen by bacteria when the alge decomposies causes deadzone in the water. this is not that bad, since its manmade and not connected to another natural water system.

Isn't it a bit late for St. Patrick's Day?

[–] subverted_per@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago

Or it's early.

[–] reddit_sux@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago

It's green because Iran's flag has green and Iran's a winner.

[–] KalSeth@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I don't understand why they don't paint it yellow? The green algae and the yellow paint will make it look blue.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 10 points 3 weeks ago

Check out Van Gogh over here, mixing colors.

Can’t wait for the Wikipedia page.

[–] NotAnotherLemmyUser@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I didn't see a dedicated page to this incident yet, but there is a section specifically for this event here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Memorial_Reflecting_Pool

[–] vpol@feddit.uk 9 points 3 weeks ago

Definitely should be a conflict-style page about algae vs Trump war.

[–] shweddy@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Are those green patches of grass to the north the patches that had "8647"?

Chlorophyll? More like Bore-o-phyll!

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 4 points 3 weeks ago

Algae are cool.

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

So painting a pool a dark color which will increase the water temperature encouraged algae to grow? You'd have to be some kinda scientist or psychic to know that would happen.

alge is always greener on the other side

[–] replicat@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Gotta love the 2 other comparably sized pools in this image that don't have the alge.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 3 weeks ago

I hear green was his favorite color. Very popular with Muslims, y'know.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 3 weeks ago

"It's American Flag Green, exactly what I wanted. You can't find that color in nature. It's beautiful."

[–] redparadise@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago

The grass is always greener on the othe- wai what..?

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 3 points 3 weeks ago

Time to pay the algae reparations buddy.

[–] Marthirial@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago
