The Balkans have such a complex history that I haven't dug into it because it feels like I'd need a whole decade before I could really get a understanding of it.

In lieu of a good book recommendation, I'd suggest checking out Balkan Odyssey on YouTube - they're a communist channel that obviously is focused on the Balkans. They haven't produced a video essay on the Bosnian war yet but I think it's probably only a matter of time before they do.

They have done stuff that goes over Eastern Europe over the period of the 90s though so hopefully it's a reasonable starting point for you.

I just started To Kill A Nation: The Attack on Yugoslavia by Michael Parenti. it's like exactly what you ask, though it doesnt have much benefit of hindsight considering it was written in 2000

Yugoslavia was too liberal and didn't attack organized religion and nationalists enough. they're also variously branded liberal on economics or successful economically, but i think that's a bit ancillary to the elephant in the room of 17 million people speaking the same language the communists couldn't manage to unify beyond one popular guy's lifetime. the Soviet Union and China are much more diverse than Yugoslavia, no excuse but bad policy
