Incredible! I think growing tents are so cool. My weed guy is an old engineering classmate and has one taking up an entire room of their house! It’s all rigged up with ac/humidifier/heat/light/water sensors so it’s basically automated; and the quality of produce is bonkers. I feel like I’m at a cool farmers market stand whenever I pop over lol. It’s not my type of gardening, but i find these set ups so cool nonetheless lea-w

honestly, if you go onto some weed growing forums/discord channels they are so incredibly resourceful. even if youre not growing weed. they have this shit down to a science, they're unbelievably talented

For sure. They were the sensors and computers type of engineer, and I’m more of water, plants and dirt, and so I felt like I kinda knew what was going on, but there were enough wires and readouts to make it feel foreign. Like you said, would love to figure it out, but don’t have the time/resources to accommodate my tinkering/trial and error learning style

. On the flip side I’ve been keeping them stocked up with native plants/shrubs/trees from the prairie plot I’ve been restoring, so they can do the same. I’ve been experimenting with growing food in it too (from seed) and may try bud at some point (I have no idea when to start/plant it). But I have a few patches of okra that grow back perennially! And sporadic corn/peanut patches to maintain the tenuous peace with the squirrels.

That's my biggest problem i feel like psychologically strangling me and keeping me from doing anything, not feeling like i have the (mostly financial) resources to get involved in learning anything... i want to do stuff like add paving stones to part of my back yard, maybe do a little wrap around porch thing or something, or like this grow room set up thing (we have several unused outbuildings with power and one with water that i could literally use for that)

but I have this constant sense of "what if I start, get into the weeds or fuck it up somehow, and everything I need to finish it ends up actually being way more money than i thought" while I'm also in a constant state of "fuck we need more money, we need to save, we need [X big purchase] soon"

I feel like i need a couple thousand dollars in my bank account just to feel safe enough to have agency as a person and I haven't had that in years

I feel that. Drives me nuts that so many things are “can’t be done” due to external constraints. My dream “job” is to be a civil tinkerer and just go around helping people build out projects they “can’t do” but would improve their quality of living. I’ve got enough hillbilly ingenuity leftover that I think anything can be solved with time and creativity; but unlike my Appalachian predecessors I live in a society deeper-sadness

Yeah I didn't want to go too crazy. I way prefer being outdoors in the garden. Unfortunately I live in a place that has a fairly short growing season and really unpredictable frosts which wiped out most of my veggies at the start of last summer so I set this up to try extend the start of the season. The plan is to get things nice and strong before getting transplanted outside when we're well past the last frost.

Ouch. Yeah I feel like the start and end of the seasons are getting more and more unpredictable. We had a heavy late frost well into summer which is unheard of here and then about a 2 week long heat wave that just cooked everything. I got a single tomato last summer. It was so disappointing.

Yeah I run into issues with splitting/blossom end rot on tomatoes often, and I can’t imagine more intense/less frequent rain or higher temps/humidity are going to make that anything but worse! I’m spoiled in that a neighbor (like you) starts seeds, and is kind enough to give away tomato plants, so I’ve been able to try growing them in the various “microclimates” to see what conditions they might thrive in. Fresh picked tomatoes are worth it though - one of the most quintessential smell/taste of summer gardening for me

I have the same tent. I had the brilliant idea of just having an all year cherry tomato plant in there. Within months it filled the entire tent and was trying to leave lmao. The cheesy 80s horror movie that no one asked for. The tomatos were great though, I had so many I started making batches of red sauce with only cherry tomatos just to get rid of them.

I bought a natural-color grow light for my house plants and they love that shit. They all compete to be closest and block everybody else out.

Nice. I did grow lights for my seedlings too this year, attached them to my bookcase and kept the little guys under them for a few months. Got really nice petunia seedlings from it that are just now starting to bloom.

amazing! this is my first season trialling with grow lights, ill be sure to post progress pics, i was so excited to see my tomato seedling break through the soil in the middle of winter

It works so great. My tomato seedlings were always a bit leggy, but this year I have the sturdiest most robust boys growing that at this point are as large as small trees. I started them in March. Makes a huge difference in a cold and dark climate.

I've been growing my houseplants under growlights for some years now too, they thrive. Am considering switching to more edible stuff indoors all year, read that you can even do strawberries. Stuff like window cucumbers are very popular now too.

Can't wait to see the progress pics.

Im thinking of getting like a storage rack setup with grow lights and shit

I'm thinking if I can grow a few things indoors and keep them away from my cat who really likes to eat plants, like I can keep some salad greens and cilantro and basil and stuff growing year round, plus use it to propagate clones of my tomatoes and whatnot before they die in the winter

Hell yeah! I've been dying to get a seedling germination thing going for a long time, but I haven't had the ability to yet. Some added advice when they start to sprout, try putting something that will circulate some breeze if the tent doesn't have it. It'll help with making their staulks better and reduce legginess.

Trying to keep an African Birdseye chili going over winter, started a small determinate variety of tomato also.
