Looks like some have to the come conclusion that the problem in "1984" was the dangerous lack of surveillance. This is a left-wing (Labour) government, btw.

Stuff like this is why I no longer want regulations to protect us from big tech. Thank you very much.

How about arresting pedophiles starting with those connected to Epstein?

[–] mastod0n@lemmy.world 8 points 10 hours ago

We will do anything except education.

[–] iceberg314@slrpnk.net 7 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I don't know why isn't it just the parents responsibility. For example where I live, you can get charged with "negligent storage of a firearm". Why can't there just be a "negligent allowing your kid to do whatever they want with no DNS filtering" offense

[–] General_Effort@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

Because parents vote?

[–] sik0fewl@piefed.ca 17 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

This is a left-wing

Oh?

(Labour) government, btw.

Oh.

Neoliberal is not “left wing“.

[–] Brewchin@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

Thank you. Needed to be said.

[–] General_Effort@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

What would be a left-wing party in the UK?

[–] Armand1@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I think Labour were left wing before, but they were compromised by right-wingers and now they are about as right wing as our right wing mainstream party, the conservatives.

Pro-Israel, arresting activists, cutting welfare and disability benefits. I like to call them Forced Labour.

[–] vikingtons@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago

absolutely. in no way do they represent their namesake in 2026.

basically red tory.

sorry, are you asking in what way a party like green would be considered left wing in the UK?

[–] General_Effort@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Ok, yeah. Stupid question. I mean: In what way are they left, but labour isn't?

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 3 points 8 hours ago

Labour focus on an economy that is for business. They think that austerity leads to growth (somehow). They basically sell themselves as neo liberals with a heart, but that heart isn't in control of much.

Greens as like the Labour of old. They focus on an economy that serves the population. They want to redistribute wealth away from corporations and banking, towards the rest of us, and services for the rest of us.

[–] ViscloReader@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

Nooo, it's only me who can look at underage nudes, not the underage people!!

[–] TeddE@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Imagine how scarring it would be to look in a "smart mirror" and have it automatically censor your own body.

This is of course, aside from the million reasons I don't trust the government when they talk about "for the children" …

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 58 points 20 hours ago (4 children)

Adults will still be able to take, share or view nude content through an age verification process.

OR "Harvesting Users data/IDs via social media isn't working because people just simply stopped using social media...but people can't stop looking at porn! that's where we'll get em!"

fuck off.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 16 hours ago

Conservative logic be like: "It's personal responsibility. If you don't want to get an abortion, just don't have sex!"

Also Conservatives: "We can't have anyone look at porn! So we must make it as difficult as possible for people to view porn."

[–] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 15 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Bet it'll still bar a significant amount of youthful looking, small breasted, hair-free folk up to the age of 40.. If they also implement an AI scan

Bet said AI model that would clearly be trained on images of CSAM will be hacked to generate worse images than Grok

[–] halfapage@lemmy.world 7 points 19 hours ago

Excuse me, my product is up here.. ;/

[–] Virtvirt588@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago

They're just evolving. Its all the same thing - a foot in the door. Using children and even teenagers as bait is the real tragedy here, such minorities are only getting harmed with this victim blaming bullshit.

[–] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 64 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (3 children)

Yeah, since it's the UK, I have a hunch that will include scanning your ID and uploading it to 5 different "international parners" aka American companies. To be tied to all online activity... Why not simply mandate parental controls be implemented in all phones and tablets, and we can do it without all the privacy invasion?

[–] crimson_iris@piefed.social 44 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

The privacy invasion has been the whole point from the start. PrOtEcTinG thE ChiLdRen is just the pretext.

[–] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 6 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (3 children)

Hmmh, sure. That's usually 300% of what this is about. Though they have some "genuine" attempts at filtering the internet over in the UK. From what I gather, ISPs are supposed to filter pornography, copyright violations, ~~gambling, weapons and violence and all sorts of stuff~~ (Edit:??) per default. So there seems to be some wish for a "family safe" internet mixed in with the usual exploiting children to manifest some surveillance dystopia... Which definitely is the major reason why this is pushed all around the globe.

Your responsibility as a parent is to make a best effort to protect your children. Giving them a phone with a camera, microphone, and unrestricted access to the whole damn internet is like handing them a loaded gun. Stop IDing everyone and fine or lock up neglectful parents.

[–] dltk@lemmy.world 9 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

If this was actually about protecting children then they could simply ensure phones had an ability for parents to enable a firmware lock which added these protections to their child's device. No need for people to provide age verification credentials to the government. Of course, it's not really about kids it's about normalizing explicit tracking of adults' internet use.

[–] socsa@piefed.social 2 points 15 hours ago

There's already plenty of tools out there. Parents don't use them, but that doesn't stop them from whining about the problem. You can lead an idiot to water, and all that.

Calling Starmer's Government left-wing is ironic considering by most accounts he's proven himself to be slightly progressive Tory in a red tie

[–] Virtvirt588@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

He is the type of person to make enemies out of both sides, no body likes him except corpos and Israel probably.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 14 points 17 hours ago

Oh god you useless fucks. You realize a non nude image is easily made nude with AI now right? The end result is the same, whether its real or not.

In addition, there are more ways to share these than just using computers. You can't possibly police it all.

[–] rob200@retrofed.com 3 points 12 hours ago

This is literally impossible even with ai and a dangerous bill for big tech. While for smaller Fediverse Communities it's much much easier to moderate that type of content since

a. we don't have to really on a corporation to provide the tools we need.
b. you would only be responsible (I think) for content on your own local feeds. However if you are responsible for federated content appealing as well, might want to federate with servers with some type of user verification (not id verification) but like verifying your use purpose of a server they are joining. and defederate from other servers that are not moderating their local feeds.

Labour government not punching themselves in the dick challenge (impossible)

I remember watching a video of a North Korean phone, which from memory took a screenshot every 15 seconds or so. Now I read about age verification with nuditity scanning on the OS level being serisously discussed in a supposed free country

[–] Miller@lemmy.world 9 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

A company like Microsoft would love this, the impetus might even be equally coming from that direction, for nudity scanning read just scanning. Their concern and limiting factor is the rich availability of alternative OS and the great unwashed just needing a reason to switch, this is not 95. If you are really worried about children you address the problem via parental obligation not forcing every adult to get into the habit of yielding personal identification to any service that asks. But everyone knows that, everyone knows what the plan is, most people view it with apathy because it is expected the powers that be will meet totalitarianism with the same degree of incompetence that they meet everything else with.

[–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago

Yeah we need to stop blaming individuals and political parties and start blaming ourselves for our complete inability to hold our own governments accountable. This is not democracy, and the more we convince ourselves this is "normal" for democratic governments to be this corrupted and/or incompetent (if you want to be generous) that they ignore the wishes of the actual human beings who they represent in favor of the corporations and state apparatus and "the economy", the worse things are going to get. Governments of any color and stripe acting like this is NOT normal, it is NOT democracy, and it is NOT acceptable, and democracy requires us to hold them accountable. People need to get ANGRY and protest while we still are able to, not be apathetic and accepting and normalize it. You did not vote for this. Do not let them get away with it.

[–] arcine@jlai.lu 20 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

We cannot possibly let children know what a human body is or looks like !

[–] Virtvirt588@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Don't throw the baby out with the bath-water.

Well said, the regulations are doing precisely what they want; which is regulating the populace. Its a double edged sword where both the corpos and gov want to fuck us over.

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 8 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The UK ain't far behind the US now is it?

[–] lil_baka@ani.social 6 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Wdym? UK started all of this. They've had age verification working since summer 2025, then EU joined and got it implemented in autumn for many sites like X for example where any NSFW content requires age verification (for more than half a year now), and US only started coming up with similar stupid laws almost a year afterwards.

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 1 points 9 hours ago

I meant in general.

[–] KingKong33@lemmy.ml 6 points 19 hours ago

So, they don't have a plan. Their "plan" is threatening the companies to implement their ideas, or else!
