I wish it was actually a decent reddit replacement, if reddit wasnt the only option and ppl got used to using more than one service they would be more open to trying lemmy too, it's why I wanted digg to succeed
Their VR Chat clone didn't quite pan out. Their Twitter clone didn't quite pan out. Onto the Reddit clone.
Their MySpace (or was it Friendster?) clone was a good earner for them despite its crap usability.

i'm curious: what makes it a mastodon clone over a twitter clone?
They could federate with servers that didn’t want to federate with them.
Threads' plan is to implement the ActivityPub protocol, the one the fediverse is based on.
In theory threads could then be federated with other ActivityPub servers (Mastodon and Lemmy for example).
In practice, many instance admins saw it as meta's way to invade that space with their own proprietary bullshit on top of it so they can progressively take control of it. So many decided to block threads as soon as it would be able to federate with their instance.
Of course the community blocked it. They didn't even try to disguise their EEE attempt (Embrace, Extend, Extinguish). Duh.
And this isn't the first time. Back in the day Facebook messenger was actually fully XMPP federation compatible! But they pulled the plug on that.
Sure. They targeted Fediverse apps like Mastodon and Bluesky.
One thing I don't understand is why they just didn't buy vrchat or one of the others that are even better. Like spatial or viverse.
Would have been a lot simpler and effective than throwing billion after billion at it.
I mean Microsoft did buy altspacevr and completely screwed it up when they made 'mesh' but Microsoft screws everything up, that's just what they do. It would have been easy to do better than that.

Has meta ever invented anything? I always thought it was ironic he called out apple for iPhone and then doing nothing, but all they've successfully created was Facebook, they bought everything else and illegally sold our data to get rich

And Reddit looks a lot like all those dialup BBS s that we used to have back in the 80s or 90s, can't remember. Before the web. Someone would post an article or maybe a picture, others would comment on it. It's all the same shit, same basic format, even here. Only the quality of people is different.
It would be fantastic if the app could join the Fediverse community, similar to Lemmy!
Meta actually did the same with mastodon, a lot instances blocked them before federation was turned on. People who use Lemmy are not likely to be up for a tech bro to be federating with them.
That said I'm sure you'll be able to find and join an instance that would do it if you want it.

It would be horrible and kill this place. Meta does not do any sensible moderation on its platforms. There are nazis on there. All those MAGA propagandists. Scammers. Trolls. Meta is doing nothing against that.
A "meta lemmy instance" integrating Facebook groups would be too big for other instances to block. Which would bring all those users you really don't want to be here into our forum with no moderation. It would also send all your posts and user data from here to Meta.
I refuse to believe anyone actually uses the word 'fantastic' unironically.
