Video Game Suggestions

2 users here now

A place to find suggestions for video games! For example, you might create a post looking for recommendations for a game to play with a friend, or a game that is easy to play if you just broke your dominant hand. Or you might post a list of games that let you use a whip as a weapon. A lot of rules for conduct here are pretty obvious (don't be a jerk, stay on-topic) so I'll bold the weird ones.

Rules

  1. Please stay on-topic: post requests for games that match some criteria you specify, lists of games with a certain element, or something otherwise relevant to helping people find games that match certain criteria.
    • If you're looking to find the name of a particular game or video game series you forgot, you should go to !TipOfMyJoystick@retrolemmy.com. This community is for fielding suggestions for games, not for finding one specific video game.
    • If you're making a post that is suggesting games, it should be a list of games. This is partially to help prevent the community from being overrun by people just suggesting their favorite game, and devs suggesting you play their latest game. This is about posts, not comments. It's okay to comment on a post asking for gaming suggestions with just one game.
  2. Don’t be a jerk. This covers bigotry and discrimination, which includes but is not limited to homophobia, racism, sexism, etc.
  3. Please don’t directly link to pirated content.
  4. When advertising something you have worked on, please use common sense for what is spammy. Self-promotion isn't totally banned: if someone asked for an RPG where you can play a lich, and the game you worked on is an RPG where you can play a lich, you can definitely answer with your RPG. I reserve the right to change this rule to be more specific about what exactly counts as spammy and what does not, but I feel I’ll know it when I see it and trust most posters to operate in good faith.
  5. Please indicate spoilers when necessary. The following format works on both Lemmy and Kbin, but if you are using an app it may not. See this comment for which apps handle spoilers. Note that spoilers in post bodies will just show the text in the preview if you link the post in, say, Discord, instead of spoiling it.
Spoilers for SomeGameSomething that happened at the end of the game! Something else that happened at the end of the game!

MODERATORS

Hi,

I'm looking for multiplayer games with good competitive PvP or MMORPG game to play. I want the game to be modern in a sense that it works well on modern computers without shenanigans.

What characteristics am I looking for:

  • competitive fair PvP aspect (not PvE games with poorly implemented P2W PvP).
  • easy to learn hard to master.
  • community aspect preferable (so you can communicate with others, team play, etc.).
  • works under Linux.
  • works on a PC.

Games I tried and didn't like (I mean maybe I liked some parts of it, but didn't like overall):

  • CS GO
  • DOTA 2
  • War Thunder
  • WOT
  • ARC Raiders
  • LOL

Games I tried and liked overall:

  • Beyond All Reason
  • PUBG (but doesn't work on Linux 😞)
  • Old COD: Warzone
  • Overwatch 1
  • Dragon Nest
  • Robocraft (R.I.P)

I'm ready to pay for a game, I would actually be happy to pay a monthly subscription for a game if this will guard me from the P2W trash.

Thanks for your time!

A friend convinced me to try The Finals a while ago, and it was pretty good. I've fallen out of playing PvP games more than a couple years ago, but I was hooked on The Finals for a week or two.

It's a fps game were multiple teams of 3 try to get to cash boxes first, bring it to a second location, and then guard it for an amount of time. Any other team can steal or claim a cash box if it isn't guarded. Games are multiple rounds, lowest scoring team gets eliminated until the last round is a single 3v3. You pick from three classes to play, each with unique weapons, skills, and items: light, medium, and heavy. Light has the lowest health/armour, but the highest mobility with skills and items focused on being even more mobile. Heavy is the opposite, high health to face tank damage but slow and heavy, most skills are support based. Medium is a mix of both, the jack of all trades. Definitely worth a try at least in my opinion, but I'm not sure if it works on Linux

Far as I've seen, it's got anticheat shenanigans which may not work on Linux unless otherwise specified.

If you want a fair competitive experience, try some fighting games.

I tried a few modern fighting games but I don't feel it's my thing

Haave you tried retro fighting games? I mean stuff like Street Fighter II

Guilty Gear Strive is THE best retro-style 2D modern fighter and I will die on this hill

It's SO good

I wouldn't call anything about Strive 'retro-style', it was practically designed from the ground up to chase modern trends and undo a significant amount of how classic Guilty Gear used to wear its retro influences on its sleeve.

How about Team Fortress 2?

[–] YUART@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

I tried, but I didn't really like it, not sure why exactly

So what was the issue with BAR (beyond all reason)?

My main issue with this game is that it doesn't have a good balance, in my opinion.

In terms of multiplayer, there is no matchmaking and you can only play in lobbies, so you are either stomped by players with higher rank/skill or you have a mishmash of players of different skill levels in one match, which may be fun, but in most cases it's not.

In terms of gameplay, it feels like the game would benefit from balancing, but overall it's possible to play. The biggest problem is that there is a new overpowered Legion faction that people want to play because it's unbalanced, and while it isn't enabled by default, there are rarely any lobbies with this faction disabled.

Besides that, I don't really like the community. While there are nice players to play with, many are idiots - for example, I think a player is an idiot if they joins "NOOBS ONLY" lobby and then screams in chat that people don't know how to play.

Not talking about that most of lobbies are played on 2 maps while the game has like 50 different maps at least...

Good modern mmorpgs can't exist in current environment. They require long-term planning and a stable environment with a dedicated team of developers.

With the idiots in charge only wanting short-term profits, have the patience of toddlers and lay off people without a thought, it's downright impossible to create something of worth.

Have you tred Final Fantasy XIV? it's trial includes like the first three expansions so you don't have to soend any money to give it a shot. I Have not tried it's PVP, so I cant speak for the quality of that part of the game, but it has some pretty good combat, and it's not at all p2w.

If OP has hundreds of hours to sink into a game, FFXIV is a great choice. I've got about 1k hours in it but I dropped off after the latest expansion in favor of Guild Wars 2. I just got sick of grinding levels all over again with each expansion, whereas GW2 has never raised the level cap and you don't have to grind for BiS gear every time new content drops.

Guild Wars 2 had lots of optional PvP content, including World versus World and smaller ranked PvP. I'm not into the PvP side of things, so I'm not sure how balanced it is, but it's a major focus of the game so there's plenty of content there.

I liked GuildWars 2 and its PvP. It has both a 5v5 PvP mode and a World vs World (WvW) mode. The game has been changed to not work with homeworlds anymore so WvW is also a lot more balanced now. The PvE part of the game is quite casual and nothing is P2W. It's not really modern anymore but I feel it still holds up against other MMORPGs.

I haven't played in a few years but EVE Online has the kind of PVP you might like. I have very fond memories of small gang PVP in that game and it's supposedly been getting into a gradually better state again over recent updates.
