I'm really getting sick of this.

Gassing up rumors of a false flag assassination attempt isn't helping.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

It's not about you. It's about online individuals validating their echo chamber the same way MAGA people do. Same people; different ends of a spectrum.

They just really need to believe it is so to the point that they'll dive into whatever narrative well before there's any information to critically analyse Sound familiar, huh?

[–] ol_capt_joe@piefed.ee 15 points 3 weeks ago

I think a lot of people are just hoping for a particular headline to signify a change from this relative insanity and don't care if it's not a double filet-o-fish that finally does it.

Hard agree with all of this.

I've seen a lot of false flag operations on both Reddit and Lemmy, so none of this is surprising. In this instance, however, I think it's just a joke.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I've been downvoted to shit this morning for daring to question this apeshit conspiracy theory, so for many it's dead serious. They've been blowing up my inbox with angry replies.

[–] BygoneNeutrino@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

I would just ignore the inbox. It has become so cheap to create automated fake accounts that what you see on the internet doesn't reflect reality. On well-funded platforms like Reddit these misinformation bots need to at least act like rational individuals, but claiming to be a far-left liberal is enough for free reign on Lemmy.

It sucks, but the Internet is still adapting to this new technology. I try not to let perceived peer pressure determine anything about me.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Are they really bots? I'm thinking it's mostly just really stupid people. But who knows.

[–] BygoneNeutrino@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (3 children)

Some are bots, but others are real people that were influenced by the bots . The Asch Conformity Experiments suggest that up to 35% of the population will adopt what they perceive to be the majority opinion.

In psychology, the Asch conformity experiments were a series of studies testing the Asch paradigm, directed by Solomon Asch, studying if and how individuals yielded to or defied a majority group and the effect of such influences on beliefs and opinions.

Groups of eight male college students participated in a simple "perceptual" task. In reality, all but one of the participants were actors. On the first two trials, both the subject and the actors gave the obvious, correct answer. On the third trial, the actors would all give the same wrong answer.

Fight fire with fire baby.

[–] pinto@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

People have been doing this since the first time, it's baffling that people don't think Trump is hated enough to be shot.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 weeks ago

Both can be true

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

The "first time" was fake though... perhaps thats why people don't trust these?

The problem is the more they preach extreamism the more it comes true in until eventually it is the only logical path.

I'm on team Occam's Razor on this. We don't need complicated conspiracy theories to explain why people keep shooting at the most unpopular and destructive man on Earth.

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Though I would like an explanation on why they keep failing spectacularly when a random kid took out Charlie Kirk with one shot.

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Secret Service actually provides decent security.

[–] bridgeburner@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

They did shit at Trumps assassination attempt in 2024. I mean covering all rooftops is like the very first thing you gonna do. Unless the SS didn't cover that rooftop on purpose, cos the whole attempt was faked.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Except this time? They were defeated by the Naruto run.

You’re right, the only thing what amazes me is that how are people with so much guns so fucking bad at using it? They wouldn’t even hit the barn door unless there’s some school kids standing there.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 weeks ago

Because shooting a gun in a real situation is nothing like a gun range.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's easy to buy a gun, but practicing on the range takes an amount of thought and effort.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 2 points 2 weeks ago

And money. Bullets are expensive.

Fake or not, how are they so bad at it?

Conveniently from California no less

[–] qevlarr@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

So tired of this "false flag" nonsense. Is it so hard to believe there are plenty of people who would want this corrupt despot dead? The worst part is how incompetent they are. I hope we will be rid of the orange menace soon

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 weeks ago

there are plenty of people who would want this corrupt despot dead

Yes

Trump is an evil lying piece of shit that would do anything to distract and divert attention to save his reign

Also Yes!

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think it's funny that up until now all the assassins came from his own people

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

He already attracts unstable extremists.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Exactly. The left has been largely calling against violence since the green scare. Where we have been supportive of violence has been the anti fascist street fights, not stuff like mass shootings, any bombing whatsoever, or assassination.

The right by contrast has been increasingly advocating to prepare for armed violence against the government and the left since Ruby Ridge.

[–] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

It's not that we don't believe people want him dead, it's that the way the people around him have been talking about it is...weird. Especially that UFC guy.

People in country where shit like this happens literally every single day, can't believe it when it happens to the most high profile, unpopular, piece of shit person who actually deserves it in the country...

The US practically breeds these people. The only reason any president survives their term is because killing someone surrounded by highly trained bodyguards 24/7 is harder than shooting up a school full of unarmed children.

Maga is basically a death cult, who is surprised?

[–] DynoNoob@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

You don't need a fake assassin. You just need to relax security a bit.

And having a president that is a master at making people hate him helps, too.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Exactly. The idea that it's a fake assassination or that the guy was "in on it" is silly. You just wait until you have someone that is actively on the FBIs watch list actually try it. Then just let them get close enough to make the news.

[–] UsefulInfoPlz@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Or you know about it and let it happen in a controlled scenario. However, if this guy winds up dead or missing awaiting trial, i wouldn’t discount this being staged and the loose ends fixed.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

Or you know about it and let it happen in a controlled scenario.

Yeah. Sorry, I could have worded that better. This is literally what I meant. The guy was probably being monitored for a long time and was allowed to get as close as he did. Maybe a little closer since he literally ran like a bullet. Lol

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

You know the assailant wasn't in on it because he's still alive. There's no way they'd let him live to talk otherwise.

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

You don't even have to. All you need is a guy running into lobby, doesn't even have to be armed.

I'm still trying to understand how he could get in the hotel with shotgun, handgun and knives, when the whole block was off limits. I guess you could hide handgun and knives, but you won't exactly fit a shotgun into a pocket.

[–] S4m_S3p1l@infosec.pub 13 points 3 weeks ago

Just rewatched all the Austin Powers movies (decided to show my partner for the first time), and holy shit it is so much more relevant in 2026.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

This is insulting to both characters tbh

[–] MrNesser@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

The guy has a solid mental defect defence. Trump himself said he is a whacko

[–] Tiral@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

All we have is highly agitated sea bass. That's the problem.

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

Mutated sea bass.
