There's usually quite a few that don't really ever get far enough for the president to be in danger, and they usually don't talk about it.
So basically they're too incompetent to stop them early, and also they won't shut the fuck up about them after the fact.... Except for when they very loudly be quiet about them.

To be fair, if I found myself in this situation, I would also hide behind Stephen Miller. I would also make rude gestures at the shooter while continuously hurling invective at them, questioning their accuracy, hygiene, ancestry, and anything else I could think of to get them to shoot in my direction.
