Ergonomic, split and other weird keyboards

Rules

Keep it ergo

Posts must be of/about keyboards that have a clear delineation between the left and right halves of the keyboard, column stagger, or both. This includes one-handed (one half doesn't exist, what clearer delineation is that!?)

i.e. no regular non-split¹ row-stagger and no non-split¹ ortholinear²

¹ split meaning a separation of the halves, whether fixed in place or entirely separate, both are fine.
² ortholinear meaning keys layed out in a grid

I think it looks cool at least and I learnt lots of skills while doing it!

I mean it looks clean as hell, mount it like a piece of art and it's a cool conversation piece + memory

Looks very adjustable! And i love splits. Why do you say it’s less ergonomic?

The idea of a thumb area and a hinge in the 3d printed chassis at the same time was not something I could make work.

You've probably already done it, but perhaps the .op lander keyboard can help with inspo getting that thumbcluster dialed in.

That looks absolutely incredible! Being able to move the columns up and down is such a great idea, and the exposed PCBs and exposed ribbon cables look amazing. Are those custom keycaps, too?

[–] Rhuari@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, I ordered them and made the svgs on the keycaps myself

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 2 points 3 weeks ago

They look great. They even fit the overall aesthetic of the keyboard.

Really cool. I also agree with making it an art piece when you've come up with a way to showcase it.

why is there a GPS chip for a keyboard tho?

[–] Rhuari@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

It's running on an Nordic nrf52840 ble on the Master side and an arduino on the slave half

[–] flesh@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That looks great! I'm curious about how that thumb cluster works for you?

[–] Rhuari@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

By itself, without the rest of the keyboard it's quite good. It's just when you try and use it all together with that chassis and system.

Ergo alone takes a long time to get used to, especially combined with split and tilt. At least for me. I gave my Moonlander away to someone that broke theirs. Just didn’t have the time or patience and it was stressing my RSI even more. I have too much muscle memory ingrained as well as bad old habits.

That being said you did a great job. it looks cool as hell. Maybe keep it for display like others mentioned.

Why do you think it's less ergonomic than a normal keyboard?

I've been following the ergomech subreddit ever since I've searched for ergonomic keyboards after wondering what's next with mechanical keyboards. I view with disdain the amount of consumerism that seems to be the major trend with mechanical keyboards with all the IMO nonsense limited group buys of metal, plastic builds

Ergonomic keyboard scene is a lot more interesting because of the inherent diy nature of it in the deep end, up to designing your own personalized layout. I just never did the jump because I don't want to retrain my muscle memory again after doing so for colemak 15 years ago
