Great Lakes region, USA. April 2026.

While out birding today I spotted this snapper laying still on the side of the river. I assume it's nesting, but it could be waiting for a snack. Last week we had snow, and already the turtles are active.

Bonus painted turtle looking for a snack.

Thanks. Yeah I didn't recognize it at first either and walked past. On my way back I noticed the green algae on the shell. They blend into rocks surprisingly well.
