They have even taken the damn sodium lamps from us though... I loathe the LED streetlight color output.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Complain to your city council. They can make LEDs any color now.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 15 points 3 days ago

They even make bright LEDS with 592nm frequency light (the same that sodium vapor bulbs give off).

Such a narrow band was great because it meant your rods did most of the work.

You can literally see better in the orange light.

There's also awesome new streetlights which will fade off when there's no traffic and fade back on when a car comes through, adjusting the brightness depending on the quantity of tradfic

Any city that has already paid to install them is not likely to pay again to change the color.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

They can just replace them as the old ones die, and use the better color in new installations

It’s bad for wildlife, too. Not that sodium lights were fantastic, but brighter and less focused is more disruptive.

That first person... Ugh.

There are more amazing books to read than you will ever be able to finish in four lifetimes. The simple pleasure of belly laughing with a good group of friends. There is more art and more free lessons explaining art than ever before. Sunrises and sunsets are and always will be magical. Playing outdoors, whether that's sports, hiking or just a walk in the sun is magnificent. Even if kids aren't for you, playing with a friend's youngling cannot fail to put a smile on your face. (Admittedly, my friends' kids might be unfairly cute, one sent me a homemade get well song "🎼You can do stuff, when you do it you can have a lot of fun like everybody do everythiiiiiiing!!🎼") Music, fine, you might not like what's popular but I guarantee you there's some amazing stuff being made for you if you dig for it and by God you have more access to it than almost anyone in human history has had. Hell, simple acts of service and kindness feel amazing and cannot be taken away from you, I brought an elderly friend some soup and the joy on her face was magical.

Life is full of as much goodness as we want, to say otherwise just feels like giving up.

Spoken like someone who has never experienced depression.

Or someone who has been deep enough down the depression hole to truly appreciate being out of it.

Just don't pay for it (according to the will of the devs)

Life doesn't need a reason; it is progenitor of reasons.

Just surviving is not living. One of my favorite quotes from The Croods. When will it be enough?

Thrifting haas been ruined?

[–] KaChilde@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

People scalp thrift stores to resell on depop or other sites. Some thrift stores have even caught on and now have a ‘gold label’ section that prices higher quality goods at a premium.

I have mixed feelings on this, as more money to the charity that runs to shop is good, but it also means that if you are shopping at a thrift store because of dire financial needs, you are priced out of owning quality products, and are left to sift through the piles of poor-quality fast fashion pieces that are clogging the stores to find something worthwhile. It also means that the scalpers only have to check one rack for the quality items when they walk in.

Value village and savers don't even donate to charities anymore. 100 percent for profit company now.

Resellers make it harder

I live for the kids in my life. I find light in the darkness from the kids I work with, as well as my nephews and my niece. I see them learn and grow, and being able to play a part in helping them navigate this dizzying world keeps me grounded. There are so many things I had to learn the hard way, so many difficult situations I had to learn to cope with by myself, because the adults in my life didn't understand and/or care about my perspective. For me, being able to guide them, to be the adult for them that I never had in my childhood, gives me a strong sense of purpose that keeps me chugging along.

Understanding there are problems is the first step to solving them. =)
