Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Trump is a reverse indicator so yeah this checks

[–] billybob@lemmy.zip 4 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Could anyone explain to me how Trump is able to tell people wind and solar are more dangerous than coal and oil and they believe him? Shouldn’t a 5th grader be able to know the difference?

[–] GenosseFlosse@feddit.org 1 points 4 hours ago

5th graders don't write the economic policy for a whole country...

[–] fishy@lemmy.today 2 points 8 hours ago

I've had the displeasure of taking to MAGA people. They are indeed dumber than a fifth grader.

[–] baconmonsta@piefed.social 3 points 9 hours ago

Does this orange baby need to be mentioned in every post in this sub?

[–] SuperZorro@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 12 hours ago

Denmark is big on wind power, and its extra windy these days, so electricity is basically free right now. But yeah, such a hoax. /s

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 9 hours ago

Trump has said a lot of dumb things. Among some of the dumbest are the suggestion of shining UV lights inside the body or injecting bleach to cure COVID (this one's a two-fer) and the suggestion that windmills cause cancer.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 93 points 1 day ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (6 children)

I'm 99% sure trump is against wind because Scotland built some near his golf course and he, once again, decided to be an absolute toddler about it

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c15l3knp4xyo

Honestly if he wasn't such an all-round, existential threat to humanity, you'd almost have to be impressed with how far he has managed to get powered by pure spite.

No. The far right and the fossil fuel industry have entered a deadly symbiosis. The far right wants to undo democracy. The fossil fuel industry wants to continue to make profits, even at the cost of millions of lives. Because climate change is a deadly risk to our civilization, they can't do that in a democracy. And that's why they did become allies to undo democracy, and why people like the Koch Brothers, Robert Mercer, UK's Nigel Farage, and Steve Bannon do work together. Or why for example Germany's AfD is working together with both Trump and Putin, or Austrian right-wing people were caught on videos discussing campaigns with Russians.

[–] forrgott@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 hours ago

No, I don't believe this had anything at all to do with trump's personal hatred for wind. Why? Your argument makes sense, and that jackass is dumber than a pile of shit.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 14 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The fossil fuel industry wants to continue to make profits

and because renewables just don't give the same guaranteed profit level as fossil fuels.

Returns on investments in fossil fuels typically range between 10-20 percent, while for a renewables project, 5-8 percent is the norm, Reuters reported in June 2023.

[–] Tywele@piefed.social 5 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Renewables are also more decentralised or at least they can be.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 5 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

There's also a huge barrier to entry in fossil fuels, since the existing industry owns the oil wells and refineries.

Any dumb asshole can just go build a wind turbine.

[–] pticrix@lemmy.ca 5 points 16 hours ago

... so it IS for stupid people! (/s, obvs)

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

And the patents you need to license to build them.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 1 points 14 hours ago

Well, patents only last for 20 years. I'm sure they have newer processes that have been patented in the last 20 years, but I'm also sure that they are using refineries more than 20 years old.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 10 points 22 hours ago

Well partially it's because of that, but also because he's taking a lot of kickbacks from the fossil fuel industry who are desperate to stay relevant, the irony of course is that because he doesn't know what he's doing he's gone started a war with a petro state that has reduced global supply by 25% and increase the likelihood of people moving over to wind turbines and solar panels for power and electric vehicles for transport.

Well, when the world's most obviously idiotic leader calls someone or something "stupid", those people or things should bear serious consideration

Petroleum parrot wants a cracker

[–] j_elgato@leminal.space 10 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Right, his revenge vendetta against... the wind.

I don't remember what the fuck that's about: Is that one of the important ones that we need to keep track of like how he fucks little kids or wants to invade Canada, or is that one just background noise that can be safely ignored like how he pretends to be tall or how he wants to fuck his own daughter?

God, I'm so tired...

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

It's literally about how Scotland refused to tear down the wind farm that was off the coast of his golf course there. He said it ruined the view.

So because of that: no new wind power in the US.

Isn't it awesome having to live according to the whims of a malignant narcissist who acts like a fucking 6 year old?

[–] DandomRude@piefed.social 50 points 1 day ago (12 children)

That’s actually a solid rule of thumb when you’re not sure: if the plan aims to do the exact opposite of what the orange mob boss says, it can’t be anything but a good plan.

He's still salty of the time a wind farm was built next to one of his golf courses. No, seriously.

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Shame he doesnt play mini golf. Windmills are standard in them.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It would be more suitable to his skill level...

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 4 points 18 hours ago

Lol imagine the cheating.🤣

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 13 points 20 hours ago

And yet his war on iran has now driven everyone to maximize efforts on alternative energy sources.

Keep it going dumb-ass. Dispite all your efforts you might -indirectly- become the greenest president anywhere ever.

[–] strop@lemmy.ml 3 points 15 hours ago

Quite quixotic

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago

All he says is a lie so if you flip "stupid" around, I guess it's a compliment.

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 5 points 19 hours ago

only reaction to anything that pissface says should just be SHUT UP. Complete excommunication.

[–] Klimaschutz@feddit.org 7 points 21 hours ago

Only smart people here, that's nice.

[–] tgcoldrockn@lemmy.world 9 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I think its kinda dumb to relate irl to games, but any good civ leader knows you decommission your coal, oil, and nuclear facilities as soon as you get solar and wind tech. Lest the oceans rise and ruin coastal economies. But I just play games, I don't lead the free world.

He also said China doesn’t have any

[–] janewaydidnothingwrong@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

It looks like those wind generators are anchored somewhere below the surface which makes sense. Could you attach something along the shaft that will rise and fall with the surface level to also help generate power? I know ive seen theoretical machines that can harness waves for energy and it seems like you could combine these two methods into one apparatus

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

Of course you could, but the energy math only really makes sense if you scale it up.

Most tidal energy projects involve damming a bay or reservoir and extracting energy with turbines as water flows in or out due to the tides.

[–] janewaydidnothingwrong@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (2 children)

I wonder if you could make a grid in 3 dimensions that could harvest energy as the nodes change position relative to each other, almost like a piezoelectric system on a macro scale edit: i'm kinda stoned so the ideas are flowing freely lol

[–] eletes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I bet it's possible but I wonder how much more complex the engineering would have to be to account for that and financials

Yeah, things usually turn out that way. It seems like it a good idea but id bet the efficiency would be low enough that it would be better to just have separate machines. Maybe if you scale it up enough it would be worthwhile
