A couple things I know of related to her talk show: 1) She kind of 'showed her true colors' by being snarky and mean-spirited ("haha, it's all just fun") towards many a guest, even making some cry or weirdly putting them on the spot when talking about a traumatic thing in their lives; 2) She was seemingly revealed to be a toxic a-hole behind the scenes to her staff and others. This is evidently not unique at all among talk show hosts, but paired with #1, it kind of sunk her reputation, it seemed to me.

She often overstepped the guests' boundaries. For exampled she pressured Mariah Carey into drinking alcohol as a toast to "not being pregnant" in order to force her to admit she was pregnant. Carey later said she didn't want to discuss her pregnancy due to a history of miscarriages. She also got really aggressive towards a guest for not having been invited to her birthday party. That's just her on-camera behavior. There are numerous stories of her being an asshole to basically everyone behind the scenes.

She’s been outed as not being the nice person she appears to be on TV. There was a big controversy a few years ago that some of her crew had a lot of stories about her behaviors behind the camera that show that she wasn’t such a nice person to the people who helped make her show a reality.
I don’t remember specifics, but it’s not hard to find if you go looking for videos or articles on it. From what I remember, it was the typical diva sort of behaviors like don’t look her in the eye and being rude to others. Nothing too too serious like sexual assault but still not nice stuff and people view her as a phony since.

how would she get caught in a bigger lie? it is her fucking business when she does or does not want to drink alcohol. and even if she drank alcohol some other time, does not mean she must be in mood for it every waking moment. i know, hindsight is 20/20, but the point is that people need to normalize not getting drunk and not having to explain to anyone why they don't want to.

I'd go as far to say that back then people would still have the old fashioned idea that all celebrities are "masterful drinkers" who are allowed one or two glasses of champagne in the middle of the day with ellen degeneres.
As such, they have narrow-minded views towards sobriety.
