Im making a post after a nightmare I just had. I considered letting sleeping dogs lie, but if I damn my eternal soul, so be it /jk… or am I? hehe

So, entertain the thought for a moment: magic is real. You yes, you could do magic and put hexes and spells on people after some studying.

But without any organizational backing, that seems like a bad idea. Of course, big nation-states would have their own sorcerers and witches. So youd have to get organized, or you might get taken out by some ops unit or a rogue operative while youre binding a level 7 demonic entity.

What I’m saying is: if magic were real (and let’s just entertain it for worldbuilding purposes), the USA would 100% be practicing advanced, high-level magic through various organizations that serve it. And not just any magic, but the darkest kind human sacrifices, blood magic, ritual orgies, that type of stuff.

So, as someone whos always been curious about the paranormal and has a bunch of different magical tomes around the house, it seems very dangerous to practice magic alone without the backing of an organized movement, or at least a coven of like-minded people.

I dont think trying to put a spell on a US president, for example, would work just like that. There must be counterspells and powerful wards in place.

Run for president on the slogan that you're a real witch

when that vampire mayor takes a shot at the presidency we're gonna need someone ready to face him.

Astareon is running?!

my favorite thing is when witches fight actually. They become the most paranoid and self-assured people in the world. Self assured because they believe their magick will protect them and also work in countermeasures, paranoid because they are always anticipating an attack they didn't plan for. My favorite is when the attack involves infestation so the magic user is like "i'm suddenly seeing a lot of rabbits, this must be the work of the bunny magician" and the bunny magician is a huge asshole and internet troll who curses people as a venting technique.

Do NOT face Allah alone when Astral projecting Today while astral projecting I summoned allah to try and weaken him so our hexing spells would work better.

He is so fucking powerful. I'm not at a power level to do this alone. I barely escaped with my life and I'm spiritually injured to a great amount, but I think I'll make it.

I can't imagine what he would do to a new, unsuspecting witch. I'm scared that I will have to face him again soon if I ever want to continue astral projecting. I'm currently burning healing incense and drawing spiritual energy from my crystals to try and heal as quickly as possible.

Please be safe everyone. Allah is much stronger than I first imagined and we will have to do this together if we want to slay a god.

For worldbuilding purposes, yeah the US would do that stuff but it's kind of fantasyslop thinking to assume that because they are the bad guys their domain would overwhelmingly be Bad Guy Magic. If magic were real, it would require fewer assumptions to suppose that it's a tool like any other and not necessarily have a moral affinity. Nuclear weapons are easily among the most catastrophic inventions of humanity, but nuclear physics can also be used for power generation, treating cancer, dating rocks and fossils, etc. The real differences for a wealthy state-level actor are the ability to extensively study it in a scientific manner and experiment with it with very few limitations, and to use it on an industrial level.

This is, incidentally, why I think many people who claim to believe in non- or less-theurgical magic don't really believe it and know on some level that they are just doing roleplay, because there are so many implications of that belief in terms of replicability and the broader political/humanitarian salience of supernatural powers that they seem to just dismiss.

my biggest disappointment in fantasy and magic is when they don't follow it to the natural logical conclusions it brings and adapt accordingly for the world building they desire

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 2 points 6 days ago

Yeah, I feel that way a lot too.

The magic system I made that was most pregnant with possibility was a magic field (like the electromagnetic field) that fae inhabit. By invoking their strength you were capable of doing things like creating illusions, solving puzzles, exercising foresight, and going so far as to read people's minds. At the end of the day, the fae were little energy beings who were talking to you and noticing things.

The twist was that in order to get fae and rarer variants to talk to you, you had to be entertaining. Either you were doing interesting things, talking to interesting people, or did cool things with the magic. You had to convince a fae to donate their energy. So it was like being a livestreamer talking to chat. The more entertaining you are, the higher your viewer count, the more powerful the magic.

The kingdom (republic with a court of industry leaders who are royals in all but name) allegory, of course, used cruel magic. Their military magic is fae destructive and it harvests the energy to make explosive, thrashing bursts of magic. They use it in service of upholding chattel slavery. So it causes a multi-headed international invasion to stop the practice.

The point being is that the magic system needs to be fleshed out in world building. Because if the US is pragmatically using these dark magicks for more power, it trades a characterization opportunity of them engaging in human sacrifices and bloody torturous orgies because they're braying monsters.

Clip-farming to pander to the fae for magic power is a very good bit. I would like to propose something, based on basically the sentiment described in my reply to the post: What about the state using that same principle in their own way? They have resources to put on big productions and to spread media all around, don't they? And surely they have many analysts doing "market research," so to speak, on what the fae like. Depending on how real the fae are as intelligent life, couldn't the kingdom either devise algorithmically-designed content to farm enjoyment from the fae or even cultivate certain tastes in the fae that favor themselves over their enemies? It seems like you have a system for making soft power very directly produce hard power.

Well, I don't have a good answer for you, but you've basically defined my new novel for me.

You see, I've been talking recently about how I messed up my novel because it was a magic college novel where the guy leaves to go galavanting. It was totally unfocused and had some of my worst writing habits littered throughout.

So I wanted to write a proper dark academia magic college novel. I had a mechanic that was going to carry the story and a half-formed plot for why he'd use it. But dismantling the state propaganda machine from the inside is a beautiful use of the plot. I even had the college replete with what I called "the facism wing of the school"

If I had to give you an answer, soft state power in my novels is nascent. Their neighbors are an old communist society, a post revolution republic, and a land that's generally post government. So fae aren't naturally keen to listen to them. But if they did start listening, then they would be cultivating horribly strong mages while simultaneously weakening the people who were recently at war with them. You could go so far as to get deep into the Marxism about the subtle lies of the kingdom

Once you become a really powerful witchie, the great satan will be no match for your hexxes. I recommend practicing on lesser satan before you move up. Dark magick is quite dangerous but there are ways of defeating it that are commonly known but a lot of witches get tempted but it and it consumes their soul and kills them almost immediately most of the time so don't fall for it. My magick affinity was stolen after a curse from lord Sazerech of belengurre or else I would have ready done it. I am trying to get back but it is quite painful. If I were to start again, I would start by astral projextion and accesing books straight from the akashic records because most of it on the lower realm is just cookie cutter bs, fake or simply trouble.
