BAIC has just revealed a sodium-ion battery with an energy density of around 170 Wh/kg — and that’s starting to get uncomfortably close to lithium-based batteries like LFP.

For a long time, sodium was seen as the cheaper, lower-performance alternative. But now we’re seeing real progress. Higher energy density, better cold-weather performance, and potentially much lower cost.

So what does this actually mean in the real world?
