"I wonder if I have just enough on hand to make red curry. Wait! I have a horrible idea."

Someone gave me this and today I was cooking for myself.

Meatballs in marinara: Meh Potatoes au gratin: double mej Tortillas: for what they are they weren't horrible. Jalapeno cheese: no heat. Very sad. Energy bar: on par with a lot of commercial versions. I'd actually buy this. Beef stick: dry but better than most without the extra sticky so many of the ground beef ones have. Decent. Coffee: I normally do black. But for authenticity I added the creamer and Splenda. I regret the Splenda. Otherwise the coffee would have been pretty good. Green lemonade: why is it green? Otherwise tastes like any corporate powdered lemonade. Gum: cool minty.

Cost per person: free

Did you set the heat pack on "a rock or something"

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

There is a small cast iron pan under the thing. It was the closest thing I had to "a rock or something".

I vomited in my mouth a bit.

That's a perfectly healthy reaction.

I see it's on a tray. Nice.

Decided my hand made wood tray wasn't right for this so I went with my wife's plastic one.

Green lemonade: why is it green?

Looking at your pictures first, I thought that was Jello!

I would kill for some MRE cheese with jalapeno. That shit is so good. I mean it’s trash but tasty trash.

Which dessert came with it? I’m a fan of the lemon poppy seed pound cake.

This was everything so I guess it was the jalapeno cheese or the energy bar. Hard to tell.

Aw, man. You got screwed. Looking online you should have got blueberry cobbler and a chocolate chip cookie with menu 8.

I knew something was off when I got marinara and tortillas in the same MRE.

Meatballs and marinara? Looks like chili.

how do you get so much free food!? 🤯 I need better friends. (Maybe I need to connect with my local freegans and dumpster divers?)

A lot of the meat comes from a parent who feels compelled to send all the kids frozen meat two or three times a year.

People die and we get tasked with doing freezer clean and pantry clean outs.

Local food bank will put stuff out front that anyone can claim.

We will drive homeless people to food pickup spots and sometimes we end up with stuff from that.

I grow it from free seeds available at the library. 5 seed packets per week.

People end up with a surplus and call us to get it. One vegetarian friend ended up with four frozen turkeys. I turned two into canned turkey and stock. Gave one away, still have one in the chest freezer.

That same vegetarian ended up giving me a bunch of weird 4 oz cuts of frozen meats from whatever senior meal service they get. Those are generally useless for most tasks but you can add it to mac and cheese or fried rice.

Very rarely someone will have a rooster that needs to go and they don't have the ability to do it themselves but they know I will take care of it. And by take care of it I mean eat it, not care for it.

I do a fair amount of volunteer work with cats. Sometimes I get a call to get free animal feed. Currently sitting on 240 pounds of dog and 120 pounds of cat food from a call a few weeks ago. Whole there I was told to pull anything I wanted from their garden beds because they were about to turn them over. I got a lot of green onions out of that and replanted them in my raised beds. Two years ago at a different place I was forced to take pounds of peppers from someone. I diced it all up and pickled it. I gave them half.

Normally free items only account for about one non herb ingredient per meal. If it's the meat then that dramatically cuts the cost of a meal.

So basically I get it from everywhere. If I can't use it, I know people who can.

Let me know what color your poop is after the green koolaid for.. for uhh.. science.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I think the two bars will make things dark enough to worry about blood in the stool so that may cloud the results. But if anything abnormal happens I'll let you know. Science must be supported.

When you’re able to poop again, that is
