In the summer of 1914, enthusiasts for war were sure they'd be home by Christmas. The ancient ruling dynasties of Romanovs, Hohenzollerns, and the 700-year-old Habsburgs felt their thrones were safe. Five years later, that was all proved very wrong.

Five years is about the time span it may take to get the Persian Gulf's oil & LNG back online if it is destroyed. Iran & Israel/US are quickly nearing the point on the escalation ladder where that may happen. “History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes,” as the famous aphorism goes. This time, the casualty may be fossil fuels themselves.

As this war progresses, the world may soon find itself in a far bigger emergency situation than COVID. Rationing and economic chaos lie ahead. Like COVID, governments will scramble for alternatives and responses.

But something is different this time. There is an alternative. It's a world dominated by renewables and electrification - not fossil fuels. We were already transitioning to it anyway. Now, war may force people's hands and make this future happen far quicker. No one wanted the old world back in 1918; they wanted a new one. We may find the same is true for fossil fuels when the latest ME war is finally done.

What a ridiculously ironic twist it would be if Trump ended up saving us from climate change. The man arguably most responsible for giving climate change deniers legitimacy and control, even going so far as to start multiple foreign conflicts to protect fossil fuels, ultimately succeeds only in finding the one capitalist friendly argument that could convince the world to move quickly towards renewable energy. God damn would that be one hell of a plot twist.

Europe and China are now getting more electricity from renewables than fossil fuel. Most new cars in China and EU will be electric by the end of the decade, if not sooner. Latest talk was they're really going to push solar panels and heat pumps in EU to switch that too. The whole gas thing with Russia really shook perception of energy dependance and what happened with Iran makes them push the power pedal down on going green.

Being under American control hasn't changed Venezuela's production, it only changes who's buying it. I'm not sure what the others are, but I can't really think of a recent war that helps to fossil fuels industry.

I have been thinking about this exact thing. This is going to cause a great push towards renewable energy.

What an optimistic take on the possible unintended consequences of a corrupt and incompetent American government.

Even before this happened there was talk we might be living in peak oil, just because growth of consumption had about slowed to a stop. Well, now it's a sure thing. An appreciable fraction of the supply is cooked.

What an incredible opportunity for China to grow at an even faster pace with their already dominating position in renewables, especially solar and electric vehicle markets.

Well done Trump. Well done.

The same kind of reverse-goal happened in WW2:

The 1950's was backlash by the remaining men against women's having validity/rights/autonomy in society.

Had WW2 not happened, then the culture of the 1950's would fundamentally still be controlling us.

Only the removal of a significant-fraction of the establishment's in-power-faction could have allowed humankind to evolve as we did.

It was when I understood that, that suddenly I understood that preventing, or significantly foreshortening, WW2 would actually have made humankind less-likely to survive The Great Filter, which is about to begin it's 1st-Yang-Stage, in the next weeks/months.

Trump's simultaneously pushing fossil-fuels while demolishing the world's relying-on-them, is just the degree of incompetence his conscious/SurfaceMind has, but his underlying-goal, to smash+trash the world so HE is the ONLY "great" one, is still progressing..

Seeing the whole results of changes-in-our-world-right-now, is a hard problem.
