I have an anger problem. Not violent, but I'd snap at my wife over tiny things and then feel terrible about it. Therapy helped me understand WHY but I still couldn't stop the reaction in the moment.

My therapist suggested I take 5 deep breaths before responding to anything that triggers me. I thought it was ridiculous advice. But I tried it.

The first few times I'd remember AFTER I already snapped. Then I started catching it mid-sentence. Now, 3 months later, I can feel the anger rising and I actually pause and breathe before I speak.

My wife noticed before I even told her what I was doing. She said "you seem calmer lately." That was the moment I realized it was working.

Has breathing helped anyone else with emotional regulation?

Marriage? Pfah. Breathing saves my very life for the last 40 years! Breathing is a very nice thing.

Breathing really is surprisingly powerful. I've been having success using box breathing in combination with thought-stopping techniques to pretty successfully manage and even cut off anxiety spirals, which has really helped with insomnia as well.

My wife taught me about box breathing to try and help with my driving anxiety and it’s definitely helped. I have tried to use it in other anxiety inducing situations too and it’s definitely helping. My therapist also taught me about this fist clenching technique albeit looks a little menacing to have a tightly clenched fist but it gives all that energy a place to go or something like that
