I've been playing Slay the Spire 2 and I've been really enjoying it.

The new characters, Regent and Necrobinder, have really interesting play styles. Overall, it's proving to be a great sequel to an already great game.

I'm really enjoying it too. I feel like they really refined a lot of the existing mechanics... it's so much more clear to me know what the original envisioning of some mechanics were.

I feel like they saw how the game ended up being played, and went back to the drawing board.

Osty is a good being, and deserves much health.

All hail big Osty

Osty deserves all the calcium in the world

I've been loving it so far. For me personally the game is pretty hard but it feels much less frustrating to lose a run than in Slay the Spire 1.

It finally clicked with me that skipping a card reward is often the best option, pathing for elites is worth the relics, and upgrading a card is often better than healing.

I'm motivated to study the game and try my best to beat A10. Does anyone know good resources for the game beyond the click baity beginner tips and going infinite montages?

Watching Baalorlord VODs and trying to reason about what choice you would make along with him is a pretty good exercise, I think. He's quite good at the game and offers good insights as he goes when playing.

Thanks, I'll check him out

Removing cards is also a big help.

Outside of a few specific cases, Strikes and Blocks are largely chaff. So my first few store visits are primarily for removing cards.

[–] fdnomad@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

yeah that was a big revelation too, I used to think it was just there to remove curses

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

The Silent is really good at that with the Discard/Sly mechanic. Having a deck with a lot of discard makes those curses way less impactful.

Strikes and defends are basically curses that do the bare minimum to beat the first two or three floors.

I'm enjoying reading how good everyone says it is.

This is going to be a definite purchase for me, but I tend to wait till games are out of early access.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

If you wait, you will miss out on the incredible placeholder art.

[–] pory@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Spire 1 had the beta art unlockable as a per-card toggle for beating the Act 4 boss. Spire 2 doesn't have Act 4 yet.

Its honestly a fully complete game, I'm hoping they only did early access because they plan to add more content. It's great and have had basically no bugs even playing 4-player multiplayer.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I bet theres a few events here and there that are unbalanced in ways they havent predicted. It'll be lots of tiny tiny changes, like tweaking rarities of certain cards if an OP build keeps showing up too often or something.

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Doesn't seem like something for early access though, like that's just normal routine patching after a full release.

You are probably right but I don't want to give up hope for moar!

Yes but also they still need to balance stuff and they're definitely going to add more stuff too. It's a very good beta they're letting us play early.

I’m not the biggest fan of the Regent, but overall am enjoying the game a lot. All the additions to the original characters are solid as well, love the sly mechanic. Dig the new enemies.

[–] Zikeji@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Regent pisses me off lol. All the others I got solid strategies with but regent is still a PITA

[–] KnitWit@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The secondary energy seems out of whack. Too hard to generate which immediately switches to OP if you get one of a few things that solve the generation issue.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, I run into basically one of three issues with Regent:

  • I have a deck that can do good damage and accrue stars, but getting destroyed without any block
  • I have a deck with lots of block and stars, but do barely any damage so it's a race against enemies strengthening themselves.
  • Card rewards flip flop between forge and stars, so can't build a consistent deck for Act I boss

I can't tell if I'm just playing him bad or getting bad luck, but he's the one I've struggled with the most.

[–] KnitWit@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think a lack of synergy between stars and forge is part of what leads to that. With sovereign blade costing 2 (or 3 with the double hit power) it doesn’t play well with having to spend energy gaining stars as well.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh yeah, what I've seen some people suggest is to target one or the other. It's just even doing that hasn't really clicked for me.

[–] ClockworkOtter@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Huh, in one recent run I was using stars to block and do chip damage whilst slowly building up the blade for a big wallop at the end.

I miss the Watcher, and still suck with the new characters (and defect apparently), but it definitely is fun. Love that they officially included multiplayer in the game, it works great (though it either makes the game considerably easier, or my friend is just carrying me :D)

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Defect is the only one im good at lol

[–] dzsimbo@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 month ago

Took me around 500 hours to beat level 20 in StS1. Such a great character.

Perfected strike + clone is broken in the best way

[–] Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

I never managed to fully get into the first game, I think mostly because I only had it on mobile and there was some jank with the touch controls. The sequel feels MUUUCCHHH more refined and I’m loving the multiplayer. I’ve been trying to stop playing MTGA because the decks you go against online are just zero fun to play against, so this has been very refreshing as a PvE alternative.
