Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Peter Thiel, the billionaire venture capitalist and MAGA donor, is in Rome this week for a series of private lectures on the Antichrist. It’s an event that the Vatican, and the pope, are treating with caution.

It's absurd to see that he is totally batshit insane and that governments still want to give all of our data to him

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 24 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I still struggle to understand if these people (Thiel et al.) genuinely believe the "DOOM IS COMING, WE MUST DESTROY THE WORLD TO MAKE GOD HAPPY" stuff, or if they're just trying to market their grifting to the religious people...

I suspect that Peter Thiel is one of these AI rationalists that seem so prevalent in the Bay Area. Or maybe an odd offshoot of them like the zizians. He certainly seems to embody a lot of the tendencies and rhetoric, though with a more evangelical bent.

People who are unfamiliar with these groups are never going to be able to truly grasp the intense psychosis they all exhibit. Behind the Bastards did a brief overview of them in it's zizians episode that really is just the tip of the iceberg, but it's not a bad introduction.

I will say if it's option too it seems to be working I've heard the it doesn't matter that where on the verge of ecological collapse because there's no way to avoid it because the Bible predicted it from so many different religious folks

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 21 hours ago

The religious stuff is almost certainly a grift

Jesus what is up with this nutjob. Why can't he just be normal

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 day ago

He needs to be put out of his misery, and all of ours

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 10 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Because he is literally the antichrist

[–] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 2 points 23 hours ago

No, that’s Peter Thiel of many colors

[–] Ooops@feddit.org 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Peter Thiel’s secret lectures on Antichrist

So he read from his still unpublished autobiography?

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

No, he thinks Greta Thunberg is the antichrist.

I'm not making that up. He's completeky fucking insane.

[–] becausechemistry@piefed.social 15 points 22 hours ago

If he wasn’t a billionaire, nobody would even be paying attention to him. He’d just be another wacko religious nut to be easily ignored.

[–] antonim@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

All I've read from/about this guy makes him sound like an anime villain.

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 23 hours ago

Why is the Antichrist in Rome? He should be banned from Europe altogether.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 5 points 23 hours ago

You think billionaires could afford a proper haircut. That this was a deliberate choice speaks to his madness.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Quick question, what theological study background does he have? If any. I am very curtain that i have more expertise with my adhd autism fueled studies of theologie especially christian theologie

[–] reallykindasorta@slrpnk.net 8 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

My dad is into theology and he found this podcast episode on Thiel’s theology interesting.

Thiel grew up under apartheid and went to an elementary school with nazi values though, so that gives a little context.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I also was a fascist in my teens. That is not an excuse. Its even worse to not see the errors of once way

[–] reallykindasorta@slrpnk.net 1 points 19 hours ago

Agreed. Offered as a bit of an explanatory reason but certainly not a justificatory one!

[–] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 3 points 21 hours ago

He doesn't have any. He grew up in an evangelical household. Studied philosophy and law. Somehow he developed a fixation on the Antichrist, Amageddon and the Apocalypse. He doesn't have any formal backround in bible studies, though. And some people call his lectures "amateurish talk".
