This is a good article. The Buddha taught compassion for all beings, and the path which leads to the end of suffering. Naturally, his followers would also like to see the end of suffering. Animals suffer when they are farmed, abused, and killed, thus any follower worth their salt would like the see the end of these too. I may take a less charitable approach for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. If it truly were that the Dalai Lama was enabled to eat meat because of his spiritual attainment, then why would Sakyamuni Buddha not eat the most meat, given he has attained perfect enlightenment? The Dalai Lama eats meat because he is not perfect. This is my belief.

Dalai Lama isn’t perfect only because it is considered a manifestation of Avalokitesvara, and he does sometimes eat meat for medical reasons, although I, as a physician, don’t know of any condition that forces someone to eat meat. Anyway I’m not from a Tibetan tradition, so I don’t know much about spiritual leaders in that branch of Buddhism.

Well if one fails to match amino acids (such as combining grains with legumes). A less informed doctor may suggest meat but I doubt that is the case.

As the consumption of dairy products usually prevents B12 deficiency from developing and for those who also oppose dairy production on moral grounds do have access to dietary yeasts that can provide that B12.

Isn't the dairy industry directly responsible for the veal industry? No calves, no milk from a momma cow. What is a dairy farm going to do with bull calves? They can only have so many studs. The moral opposition to dairy is the same as being opposed to eating beef, imo.

Really tho, how you choose to practice is your decision. My judgment sets me back in my practice.

Recently, I've been reflecting on the Koan "Shoun and his mother."

Directly responsible; no. Related yes. One has to remember that the dairy industry includes human breast milk which has different ethical concerns depending on how it is sourced…

Actually, every guideline strongly suggests that both vegans and vegetarians should take a B12 supplement.
