Also a great way to make the enemy fight to the death, causing you more casualties in the process. What a dumbass.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 27 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I think that's the intent here. They need a new forever war.

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

Different scope, though. I don't think quarter or no quarter affects the whole country's willingness to surrender (the chance of that is basically zero either way), but it does affect individuals. If you have a few enemy combatants holed up somewhere, it could cost you a lot of people, ammo and time you'd rather spend somewhere else to take them out. They know they can't win, and it's either surrender or die. But if surrender means death, they'll definitely not surrender. Now you need to eliminate them the hard way.

Of course, doing it that way requires more resources, which I guess is good for business in the military industrial complex.

I'm sure Trump has convinced himself that if we're in the middle of a meat grinder war, we won't want to "switch horses midstream," the phrase Nixon used to convince people to vote for him in 1972, so he could finish the war.

Trump thinks we'll beg him to remain in office and fight this war as only he knows how to do.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 3 points 1 month ago

The dream of any fascist.

[–] not_IO@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

serious question, what do they stand to gain from that.

The american people aren't behind this, you could make the argument that it served to rally europes political class behind the US again but i don't think that's a priority for the trumo administration

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

War powers - cancel election - narrow all power into the executive - god king names successor probably Barron

Essentially North Korea

[–] Embargo@lemmy.zip 38 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Where are the repercussions though? I'm not sure laws mean anything anymore... other than being a tool of oppression of course.

I think the world has to sanction the US. The mechinisms to prevent and punish whats going on from within have failed. The rest of the world has to stand up and say No.

But it's spreading fast to other countries too.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think we're beyond the point of sanctioning the US being effective. We have carrier groups all over the world. If the regime wanted it? They can get more.

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Denying the use of ports is a good start.

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

You just know the defense will be "he doesn't know what it means, he just heard it in a movie once and thought it sounded badass".

[–] Soulg@ani.social -3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Right now, nothing, because his party controls both houses in Congress.

I'm the future, the potential for consequences does exist, but who knows if we'll see them

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 15 points 1 month ago

American admin war crimes don't get punished by either party.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why no high ranking officials got punished for the Iraq war when dems controlled both?

[–] pinto@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I can count how many, and it's less than 1.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Have you not seen what Trump said about POWs like McCain?

Trump doesn't want to get any POWs back.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I vaguely recall it was something very offensive, but cant remember what.

[–] EvilHankVenture@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

[–] twjolson@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

[–] KingPapaDaddy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I’m sure there are women who would date that guy.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

sure, insufferable women who value themselves less than a pet.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

There is both decency and negotiating leverage that could have been obtained by rescuing the Iranian ship they ambushed. US is planning an extremely low probability of success escort or landing mission, where standards of military decency would make US troops less scared.

[–] Strawberry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago

They almost certainly did this in venezuela too

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

as the great Shit-zu said,

when attacking an army leave no escape, no path for retreat. that'll teach them to fuck with us!

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

You ever suspect certain people were given government jobs because someone thought they were an asshole and decided they should be set up to go to prison? Hegseth seems like he was put in office for the specific purpose of taking a fall like the idiot he is.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

He sure has a big mouth while his military is getting their ass kicked.
There will not be any surrendering troops anyway.
For that you need an army to surrender to.
And a boots on the ground operation is 100% going to fail.
It is not possible in Iran due to geography and the vast size of the country.
Besides that they have advanced weapons and prepared for that.
If anything Iran would welcome such a mistake.
But who knows since the US gov doesn't listen to experts and keep making mistakes.
Like only yesterday bombing Kharg Island.
A gigantic blunder.

Edit: and then there's this news.
