I tend to need them about 2 weeks after saying "its been 10 years man im never going to need this" and chucking it away
Showerthoughts
A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
I had an extra draw in my desk for a while; Decided I'd keep a few steands of string in there; Partner laughed and called it ridiculous; lo and behold couple months go by and who comes along looking for string.
My box of wall warts and power supplies thanks you for this post.
I love my box of AC adapters. It has come to my rescue many times.
And nothing worse than not being able to find the thing that you stashed away years ago for exactly this situation!
I have packages of cable ties everywhere, in every size and color. I stumble across a pack of them weekly. Yet, when I actually need one, I can never find a pack, and end up buying an entire new pack from Dollar Tree.
The other day, I needed one, and after I was angry and frustrated over not finding any, when I know there are THOUSANDS in this house somewhere, I decided to drive to Dollar Tree and buy ANOTHER pack, so I could use one, and lose the rest, again. I was about to pull out of the garage, and looked at a shelf, and there was a pack of cable ties sitting right there! Dollar Tree trip averted.
I put those with my tool box, but I know there are a lot more around this house somewhere.
Hoarders seeing this like

But it also enforces the "keep everything just in case" mentality/habit. This situation feels good precisely because it beat the odds. 🙂
It's cheaper than gambling.
Nor a more rare thing
I recently had use for a piece from my cable collection. ╰(*°▽°*)╯
You're a hero.
Only thing better is not keeping things for 10 years without using them.
Exactly, like my box of condoms! Knew they'd come in handy one day 😎
"condoms" "come in" "handy" I feel like there's a joke here, but I can't get it out! I'm so close...
don't eat the crab dip!
There are 10s of thousands of things more satisfying than that…
"99% of hoarders throw away the stuff they thought they would need later a week before it was needed."
