It says the mission is the first in the Yellow Flowers Rising series, so it makes sense it hasn't been mentioned before

Yes, but maybe someone with deeper lore knowledge than me would remember some dots that might connect to that?

Like "art historian"+"biological specimens"+"yellow flowers" -> "The King in Yellow"? Horrors/Cthulhu?

Ah. My assumption was that it was going to involve the Yellow Lotus triad in some way, but that's just a guess from the name...
