Today’s game is Pokemon Emerald. I’ve been kind of wanting to play through this ever since I saw FRLG were getting released. I have nostalgia for this one because it was my first Pokemon game. I didn’t grow up with it being my generations Pokemon, but I remember loading it onto an emulator on my old phone, and having to speed run it under a week in Middleschool. I had an iPhone then, and if I didn’t speed through then the “certificate” would expire and id be stuck without and my save gone.

Anyways, because of that I’ve played this game so many times. It’s one of my favorite of the old generation of games, and setting it up under an emulator helped breathe some new life into it. I had wanted to pick up a GBA and a Flash Cart and play it that way, but I got a little impatient so this works too.

There’s not much to show in games like this, so I’ll just say that I made it past the 3rd Gym. Younger me would be proud seeing this kind of progress in one day. But because of this lack of interesting stuff today will be a bit shorter with less pictures and more talking.

Now that I’m not on a timer, I want to fill out the Pokédex. It’s been a goal I’ve been working on in the background to fill out the National Dex in Pokemon Home with all the Native Pokemon from their respective regions. I’m doing this by using a modded 3DS to transfer it all up, hopefully before the Pokemon Bank servers shut down. So far I have Platinum, Black and White, and I had started XY (But gave up as something bothers me about them so I’ll come back later)

I also enabled Retro Achievements which makes this more fun. It’s like having a checklist to full 100% which is a fun experience. I just wish there was 3DS integration so I could play that way and make it truly portable. I’ll take what I can get though as this is fun. I ended off my night just by looking at the page to see what all so I can do.

I've been playing Pokemon Too Many Types, a rom hack of emerald that triples the number of types and gives each pokemon new typing, up to three types per pokemon. It's a lot of fun to try and figure out the brainrot logic. For example, gamer type pokemon are weak to water and grass, because they don't shower or touch grass, probably. Freshens everything up and pulls in quite a few pokemon from further in the series. Starters are poplio, a water/silly type, fennekin, a fire/fluffy type, and chikorita, a grass/bean type.

It's a beautiful mess.

I might try that. I’m a big fan of rom hacks that are just random shit tossed into a metaphorical sink. So it sounds like fun

I watch smallant playing this one 😄

It has been jarring getting to your dad's gym and finding out

Tap for spoilerHe's the furry type gym leader, though no one will say it to you out loud. And he has a lopunny, and a vaporeon, and his lucario has bone rush... Is this why he lives in a different town than you and mom? Oh no furry is weak to dragon type? Oh no....

I play my emerald on my 3ds using an injected Virtual Console game installed via CIA (or FBI, 😂 often confuse the two), I think it is .cia file installed via FBI App.

Additionally to that, I use PKSM App on my 3ds in order to enable events and transfer Pokemon from game to game (like Pokemon bank)

Like this, I have all Pokemon games installed from blue/red to UltraSun/UltraMoon and can convert Pokemon up and down

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

Sheeeiiiit I’ve never heard of PKSM, thank you! I am installing that immediately.

My plan is to move my Retro Arch save over to 3DS for PKSM (it’s a godsend for event Pokemon). After that I’ll move them to bank with ORAS or something, and hold them there until I get all the Pokédex entries for the generations prior to Gen 7. then shift them all over (to avoid being tied to a subscription). Then I’ll just set whatever I’m not attached to free.

I might try installing all of them like you do. My 3DS is in rough shape so I don’t use it often (Nintendo really dropped the ball on the New 3DS XL’s outer shell, mine started peeling so easily) but I might refurbish it to play all the games. Having them all be portable would be nice.

Ooh this reminds me of getting almost every pokemon, one from each family, just had a little level grinding and breeding to do, all on AS, before my 3DS died and I lost all of it due to Nintendo's bonkers save protections. I had the SD card for the longest time. Haven't made a catch em all attempt since.

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Nintendo’s save protection drives me crazy. I remember back in the day my SD card had some sort of issue and went read only. I had copied just the saves as a backup before it went bad though. So I thought “well. I can just drag and drop them into the save folder, right?”. Apparently not because the system reported them as corrupted

I'm currently playing through Emerald with RA enabled as well! I've completed the pokedex in Red and Crystal, but I've never played far into anything past gen 2 (despite mudkip being one of my all-time favorite starters), so I'm looking to work my way up and 100% at least one game in every gen and their pokedex. Eventually. My motivation to catch them all wanes somewhat once I start actually doing it.

I had also temporarily started a mudkip-only (plus castform who's forced on you) run prior to this, but decided to put it on hold so it wasn't my first experience of Emerald lol.

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I’ve never touched actually Red and Crystal. I plan too at some point but those generations I’ve never been big on. I almost considered the rereleases because I know my friends would probably shell out the 20$, and having friend to play with would almost justify it for me and motivate me to play it. But I just couldn’t justify the purchase to myself (plus I found out all my friends that are still local are passing on it). Maybe if it ever goes on sale for cheaper, but being digital only and 20$ makes it hard for me to look at it.

Also, yeah, I’m in the same boat with waning motivation. I almost filled out the Hoenn Dex in Omega Ruby but just got overwhelmed when I accidently unlocked the National Dex.

I saw the mudkip only challenge on RA, I kind of want to attempt it once I finish my base game run. It’d be a fun challenge.

Even though Black and White were newly out by the time I got into Pokemon, the only one I had growing up was my older brother's Blue. So I've always been a fan of the originals even if they're missing a LOT of polish, though the gen 3 remakes like Leaf Green are much better in about every way. I mostly just did Gen 1 and 2 for the nostalgia and RA achievements.

I just pirated the ROMs and played them on RetroArch. I've owned the physical games before, and, personally, I'll never feel bad pirating from Nintendo regardless.

The mudkip vs the world challenge is pretty fun (I got to the 5th gym before deciding to pause it), but from what I saw in the discussions board, a certain post-game(?) section is absolutely brutal to an unfair degree and is like 99% of the challenge's difficulty. I saw people recommending keeping mudkip leveled as low as possible since trainers there scale with you, and to stock up on tons of the PP-restoring berry. So I look forward to whatever the hell is up with that whenever I continue.

Nice, totally with you on using RA as a checklist for these games (especially after multiset). It feels a bit more guided, especially as they add more and more gimmicks over the years. In post game, it's practically essential.

White 2 is still kicking my butt because it's just so, so much stuff. Emerald at least is probably a bit more tame. I've still got to beat battle subways, star in movies, beat the Elite 4 with every type, and do every post game tournament including battles with all previous games gym leaders... Plus a 400+ Pokemon capture/evolve/breed list which is just the White 2 only dex entries.

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I like when achievements act as a checklist, while having a good balance as well of fun little challenges to do. I think a lot of games just either through difficult challenges at you or make them landmarks. It’s hard to find an inbetween game.

I’ve yet to tackle White 2. I did white 1 and completed the Unova Dex, and checked what else I’d need. Immediately saw everything and went “you know what… I’ll come back later”

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

Yeah, it's my first time with it. Even as a check list it's an insane amount of content. I'll need a detox with something smaller afterwards!

Also, I like the hard stuff but subsets help keep that sorted so it doesn't scare people away. White 2 has a challenge mode that was bugged at release but the RA patch fixes it. It's not too hard and it's kinda fun being challenged in Pokemon for once since I used to play competitively and actually know some strategy, haha.
