Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

The joint statement from the E3 β€” France, Germany, and the United Kingdom β€” is a master class in evasion. "We did not participate in these strikes, but are in close contact with our international partners, including the United States and Israel," they declared. The text also lists all the references and rationalizations used by Iran hawks β€” β€œnuclear program, ballistic missile program, regional destabilization and repression against its own people.”

Not a single reference to the international law that explicitly prohibits aggression. It is particularly Orwellian that the European leaders β€œurge the Iranian leadership to seek a negotiated solution,” when Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was literally doing exactly that the day earlier in Geneva.

Why should Europe care for Iran? Nobody cared when Russia attacked Ukraine with Iranian support.Β

Russia attacks Ukraine: "how dare they not follow intl law!"
US attacks Iran: "well done getting rid of that bully!"

Sure there is loads of difference between Ukraine and Iran, but the EU not calling the aggressors out right now is setting a very deadly precedent.

That was the last vote for peace in Ukraine in the UN:

Iran was for a longer war. Even worse most of the more powerful countries abstained. That was including the US, China, India, Brazil and Indonesia.

[–] bossito@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

Gentle reminder that Iran was helping Russia to attack Ukraine and never showed any interest in international law or human rights. Why should we care? I most definitely don't. Hope their fascist regime crumbles as fast as possible.

[–] huppakee@piefed.social 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I hope both Russia and Iran will get rid of their fascist regime, rather sooner than later. But despite Russia not caring about international law, I do think it held them back when invading Georgia or anexing Crimea. Now any country can do as they please, because if America doesn't have to follow the rules, why would they? Imagine having to teach a class where everybody has to follow the rules but one kid can do anything he wants - recipe for chaos i tell you. I'm not saying the EU should stand with the Iran, but they should at least point out that America is breaking the rules in the way they are getting rid of this awful regime.

[–] bossito@lemmy.world 0 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

But who's following the rules? Not Russia, not Iran, not Azerbaijan, not Sudan, not Rwanda, not Ethiopia... And the list goes on. This is not new. The question is more, why would the US follow them if no one else does and there's no consequence?

[–] plyth@feddit.org 2 points 6 hours ago

This is backwards. The US is the hegemon. They set the standard. The others don't follow the rules because the US were breaking them.

[–] huppakee@piefed.social 1 points 6 hours ago

Totally true, but the us is supposed to be one of the adults, not one of the children. And there isn't always no consequence, especially if a country like us would recognize the international courts.

yeah, i think it was perun that might have mentioned the shaheed manufacturing being a huge impact player for the russian side

I just see three terrible countries at war with each other. I don't see why we have to root for any of them. Seems like a Win-Win-Win to me.

One might argue that is one of the primary strategic goals of this attack, to with vigor fracture any kind of foreign policy unity Europe could develop with regards to Israel, The US or Russia, thus allowing domestic fuckery with rightwing movements within specific European countries to individually derail efforts to mitigate the behavior of Russia, Israel and the US.

If things get more ethical than might makes right than Russia, Israel and the US stand to lose massively in the geopolitical sphere, this is an attempt to shatter these ideas in our minds so that military empires can get back to killing without having to even bother trying to justify it.

Macron is a spineless bootlicker, don't know bout the others but clearly the German government never seems to go against netanyahu's decisions. UK doesn't institutionnaly belong to Europe but the government seems to abide by netanyahu's words too

As a rookie complotist i'd say this demonstrates the power of the files netanyahu has on all the western leaders, thanks to Epstein or not.

As a human being, I just witness the last shards of the UN attempt to push forward an international order be completely dispersed

Merz is a former Black Rock manager (a job that made him a millionaire) and currently is gutting as much climate and social policy as he can get away with. He would love to be the German Trump.

Partners? Fuck they ain’tΒ

It wouldn't have changed much. At this stage Europe is totally vassalized and can't do anything meaningful.

[–] NorskSud@lemmy.pt 4 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Why would Europe defend a country that's being helping Russia to attack us? We're not suicidal. Good that those religious fascists are gone.

[–] alfredon996@feddit.it 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Not to defend Iran, but to be neutral. China and India are also helping Russia buying their goods, this doesn't mean that we should try to be in good therms with them.

With the JCPOA treaty, we were building a good relationship with Iran, until the US pulled out for no reason in 2018 and the vassalized EU followed shortly.

[–] NorskSud@lemmy.pt 1 points 6 hours ago

Ukrainians die every day victims of Iranian drones. Iran sponsors terrorism against Europeans through Russia, Hamas, Hezbollah etc.. let them rotten. This is not our war, but this might end up being good for us. We owe them nothing.
