In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, few disappearance cases in New York City cast as long and unsettling a shadow as that of Etan Patz. Though he vanished on May 25, 1979, the investigation and its cultural impact defined the city for decades afterward, reshaping parenting norms and public awareness of missing children.
