Hi. I'm just getting started with this and I want to put an antenna on my house. I live in Washington state right along the US/Canada border and I'm hoping to be able to contact users on both sides. My house is at about 200' elevation and the roof is around 25'. I can easily attach an antenna to an unused chimney I have. The roof is metal if that matters.

My goals are to be able to use it to contact users on the Canadian side (approx 15 miles) within line of sight, as well as use it for communicating with my own mobile systems close to home (4-5 miles).

Power would be simple enough to run and my home is already running in solar so in theory it could work off grid.

Is this something that would be feasible? If so, can someone recommend some equipment to get me started. I'm fairly handy with computers and I'm already running home assistant. I'm also not afraid of some light assembly if necessary. If it helps, I also have a couple ESP 32 and raspberry pi boards laying around.

Thanks!

That sounds like a fun project! Just got myself my first meshtastic, excited to see how it goes.

Hire someone if it is that far outside your abilities, fake account age spambot.

Lmao, they've made one post. Why do you jump to the conclusion of spam not?

[–] Pfeffy@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because it's one person spamming stuff on multiple fake aged accounts.

How do you tell? Also, what would the purpose of spamming a support post be?

This is an odd response. I'm not a fake account, I read lemmy almost every day. I just don't post much. I'm just looking for hardware recommendations, how would I even go about hiring someone for that? Also... Why would I want to. Isn't this whole hobby supposed to be focused on DIY?

I hope not everyone here is as salty as you are.
