Thank you. I need to do some measurements and figure out which of these antennas is best, but this is a great list to work from.

Thank you. This is just what I'm after and this video is very informative. I think this is what I'll try.

I need to do some line of sight geometry around my property to see what the best antenna placement is.

Cheap node? I've heard of heltec v3 and sense solar P1. Are these good choices?

Would it be better to put an antenna up high and keep the node closer to the building? If so, what sort of antenna?

I posted here a couple days ago, but I think my post was removed. Someone accused me of being a bot.... But I'm not a bot. I'm not sure what that's about. Maybe it's the way I write.

Anyway. I want to set up a base station on my house. I looked on the metastatic site and the nearest base station to me is around 25 miles away. Is it possible to reach this far with equipment a mere mortal can possess?

I live on a hill in a marine environment is that helps. I can power it with mains power or set up a solar panel. I would be open to spending a few dollars on the right setup if it means I can connect to the greater network. I'm IT savvy, but a radio noob.

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

This is an odd response. I'm not a fake account, I read lemmy almost every day. I just don't post much. I'm just looking for hardware recommendations, how would I even go about hiring someone for that? Also... Why would I want to. Isn't this whole hobby supposed to be focused on DIY?

I hope not everyone here is as salty as you are.

Hi. I'm just getting started with this and I want to put an antenna on my house. I live in Washington state right along the US/Canada border and I'm hoping to be able to contact users on both sides. My house is at about 200' elevation and the roof is around 25'. I can easily attach an antenna to an unused chimney I have. The roof is metal if that matters.

My goals are to be able to use it to contact users on the Canadian side (approx 15 miles) within line of sight, as well as use it for communicating with my own mobile systems close to home (4-5 miles).

Power would be simple enough to run and my home is already running in solar so in theory it could work off grid.

Is this something that would be feasible? If so, can someone recommend some equipment to get me started. I'm fairly handy with computers and I'm already running home assistant. I'm also not afraid of some light assembly if necessary. If it helps, I also have a couple ESP 32 and raspberry pi boards laying around.

Thanks!
