Daily reminder that pull yourself up by the bootstraps was a way to say something was ludicrous or impossible. These idiots can't be bothered with understanding.

"Originally meant to attempt something ludicrously far-fetched or even impossible, the phrase "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps!" "

You people are really blaming billionaires?

  • Large corporations paying low wages and poor working conditions is the fault of the large corporation!
  • Complex tax avoidance schemes and lobby for low tax rates on wealth, inheritance, and capital gains is more of a tax issue!
  • Governments cutting services for schools and social services cause of lack of tax revenue is more of a government issue!
  • Buying political influence through campaign spending, lobbying, and media ownership isn't illegal. Anybody can do it!
  • Media and tech platforms that shape narratives, spread misinformation, and deepen polarization isn't a billionaire issue. That's a society issue!
  • Buying things like private jets and space tourism while underfunded communities face climate disasters isn't a billionaire's fault. Those communities should really learn to balance their resources!

Granted, billionaires are the root cause of all those problems. But when you ignore that part, it's really someone else's fault!

"None of your problems, not even your stolen TV, are because someone else is a robber."

This has Homelander meme vibes...

In the 80’s and the 90’s this could fly, but at this point if you can’t recognize the systemic consequences of individuals hoarding wealth and using it to manipulate the government, you really can’t be taken seriously.

this is supposed to be ironic right? its like too on the nose to use the bad guy who has literally enslaved a planet before destroying it just so serve his own ends telling you to do something that is impossible

These chuds love using the villain for their point. Remember years ago there were photoshoped images of trump as thanos or the emperor of mankind?

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago

We're not sure, we're discussing it. Either way, it's hilarious that I got wooshed, but it would be even more hilarious if OP got wooshed. It would be a double ironic.

Omniman is literally a bad guy in the setting that's lying to Earth, right?

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Did I have a woosh moment?

[–] binarytobis@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

I want to believe that the person who made it was using the quintessential space nazi to drive the satire home. But, you know, Poe’s law.

[–] Calfpupa@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago

Possibly, but in memes he's depicted as a reasonable asskicker (the think omniman meme) so it's just as possible OP wooshed themselves

[–] Triasha@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Did they watch the show? Of course not.

[–] marighost@piefed.social 14 points 1 day ago

Ok, fine. Most of my problems.

If we ever ban corporate political donations, maybe. Also, if we put a decent carbon price on everything, including private jets.

Also, and maybe this is a stretch: don't let billionaires buy and control entire media systems! (Or contribute the majority of its revrnue by paying for ads.) Half the reason for the US Clusterfuck is that the media didn't call out the blatant bullshit when it could, which legitimised the bullshit because "if it's so bullshit, why aren't the media all calling it out?".

[–] Triasha@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly, if we did all that, Billionaires would still be a huge problem.

They invest all their money. They can't help it, it's not malicious, they can't spend that much money.

Investments like that get poured into assets, like land and housing. This makes them unaffordable for us non billionaires. Gold and crypto are not significant problems for us plebs, stocks are a moderate problem. But housing is a huge problem for anyone that doesn't already have one, and a moderate problem for those of us that do own our own homes. It drives up our property taxes and freezes up the labor market, dragging the economy we live in.

We should redistribute the wealth. Put it to some useful purpose, like healthcare, childcare, or education.

But we would nearly all be better off if we took all the billionaire fortunes and lit them on fire.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 2 points 18 hours ago

stocks are a moderate problem.

I would say that it leads to things like enshittification and shrinkflation as companies try to squeeze more profit to increase their stock prices.

I agree that housing is the big one though, since it has so many negative effects on society. The housing crisis is an everything crisis.
