Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

The person that is okay with Frontex and what and how they do it, AND still thinks theymself of being inline with EU values, i would like to meet.

[–] RidderSport@feddit.org 23 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

They share no similarities apart from being border patrol agencies, which checks notes literally every country in the world has.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 hours ago

They do. It is a fact that FRONTEX drives near small refugee boats to create waves and bring those boats to capsize or be swept of course away from europe

[–] not_IO@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

frontex largely is there to attack and hinder rescue operations in the Mediterranean and do mostly pushbacks, which are illegal, against human rights and often deadly.

they are known to use excessive violence.

they have next to no accountability, it's not even clear under which countries law they fall.

their "legal basis" isn't a law but just contract that the EU has with itself

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

That does not make it fascist though.

[–] not_IO@lemmy.blahaj.zone -2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

well it's illegitimate, with no accountability, over the top violent and against brown people, kinda like ICE

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 8 hours ago

The point is not whether it's "kinda like ICE". You frame the EU as fascist and Frontex as a fascist organisation, and neither is true.

Read up on definitions. And don't post memes in communities that explicitly rule out memes as wanted content.

soooo....

like any international treaty?

like human rights are?

No, not fascist. Xenophobic, definitely. Racist, sure. Even dehumanizing mass murder. But fascism has many more defining characteristics that are not met in Europe. For example, one of the most important characteristics are cult like efforts towards a nationalistic unity and strength, as well as a purity cult (as in racial or national purity, not sexual abstinence).

Frontex could be an indicator of a fascistoid regime (like ICE is in the US), but itself it isn't evidence of Europe being fascist, nor is Frontex a fascist organisation (the first being true for ICE, the second would need more information to evaluate).

Also, this community is not for memes.

p.s.: the US shows additional characteristics of a fascist regime though, like a Führer-cult, purity culture, etc. The US is not a fascist state yet, but Trump's government and the MAGA-movement are pushing it further towards that kind of regime every day.

The most important trait in fascism according to political science is the tale of "nation was great and naturally better than every other nation, but the influence of [insert jews, people of color, any marginalized group you want to get rid of] made the nation weak. Now we need to "get rid of" [i.e. kill, but we start by calling it remigrate or something] said group in order to be the greatest nation ever™ again."

That defines fascism. While Europe (as in EU) lacks the identifying unity for EU fascism, the far-right parties, which seem to take over in many member states, all are riding that story.

[–] Kornblumenratte@feddit.org 0 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I just wonder - who did the original Fascists - Mussolini & friends - used as scapegoat?

[–] kossa@feddit.org 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Socialists and Communists.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 hours ago

Dont forget jobless, homeless, disabled

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

First, neither Europe nor the EU is a nation. Second, while the far right is getting stronger in european countries, they are governing maybe two or three countries. And third, while an important characteristic, that tale is not the only defining characteristic.

The US and the EU are abso-fucking-lutely not even close to the same degree of fascist.

[–] kossa@feddit.org 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

And third, while an important characteristic, that tale is not the only defining characteristic.

No, it's not the only one. It's the characteristic that all the (major) definitions of fascism have in common, that's why it is important to check for.

But that is exactly what I wanted to say: the EU "lacks" being a nation and the far-right has a hard time in using that on an European level, because it is hard to sell "EU was great" to people who do not feel themselves "European" as part of their core identity.

The US and the EU are abso-fucking-lutely not even close to the same degree of fascist.

Yep, did I write that somewhere, must have missed it.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 11 hours ago

You answered my comment like a counter argument, so I thought I had to drive the points home again.

[–] saimen@feddit.org 1 points 9 hours ago

The border policy is just one fascist symptom of MAGA US. There are many other more important things

[–] arrrse@piefed.social 1 points 9 hours ago

Thanks for the translation?
