Honest to gods, this conversation happened today, and it may have cost me a job opportunity. The customer was super impressed with my menu design and animation, and wanted to know who we got it from. When I said I did it, their face lit up! Too bad as soon as i said GIMP, they weren't interested anymore. Has anyone else experienced this? What do you say in similar situations?
Here's my got take:
If gimp was good enough it's name wouldn't matter. As of now it is not, it could be someday but it isn't yet. I am so hopeful that it is eventually as easy to pick up as PS.
I'm sorry but if Pepsi was called Cripple-Juice I doubt it would be as big as it is today.

Hey, if you can code an excellent program while in a gimp suit...props to you.
I know it's not easy for everyone but I think if one would say "GIMP!" with bit more confidence it would already help a lot.
Instead of doing the awkward:
"I-I use G-Gim.." sweats nervously "uummm Gimp.. It stands for GNU Image..." ÜwÜ
Alternatively just say "I edit/create the images myself and use Canva to animate it"
I'd just follow up in the same sentence with "it's an Adobe alternative". People tend to fix on the last thing in a sentence so they'll just ask why you don't use that instead.
Having an acronym within an acronym feels like it should be illegal...

We liked our ICE perfectly well. Nowadays I can't even mention to a customer that I like trains.
also latex lol i always google things like "red colored text latex" and get pictures of people in latex suits
We need something like blender to happen to GIMP, including a name change.
Sometimes people will be like, "can you edit this image/logo for me?" and i'll be like "Sure, if its vector i will use Inkscape, and if its raster I'll use... Another program"
Gotta whip out "The GNU Image Manipulation Program" or just say "an open source image editor like Photoshop" or just say Photoshop of you are speaking to the wrong audience.

Where I live, fortunately most people in my country never know what "gimp" in a different context is.
Because you are not supposed to go out during the day in public if you know what those things are. At least not talk about them in decent places where other people might be.

You could have just said you use animation software for it and not go into details.
Most customers don't care anyway since they aren't going to do it themselves.
