  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

Slightly off topic, but I find it surreal that this world war will be about democracy against royalty and their court of cronies. Trump has been acting exactly like European royalties and their courts, maximising their own wealth at the cost of an entire nation and engaging in wars over inheritance of territory and the like.

You've got a pretty strange idea of European royalties. Has there ever been a European monarch behaving like Trump who was not detained within months?

Historicaly, there has always been a system of checks that balanced the power between monarch, aristocracy, church and people and through most of history the monarchs were less powerfull than any modern autocrat - some exceptions notwithstanding. Most aristocrats including monarchs were aware that they are but a part of a dynasty, and that they themselves are able to thrive only if their fiefdom thrives. So no - this is not a war between democracy and royalty, it's a war between democracy and autocracy, and the royalties are on the side of democracy.

Until the revolutions of 1848, absolutism was the form of government for hundreds of years. A perfect example would be the Austrian Empire. The reason why modern Austria has such an absurdly rich collection of cultural artifacts is because the emperor used tax money to fund his hobbies. Only after the revolution in Austria of 1848, there was a separation of power, where the emperor was removed as the operative head of state. Before that, yes, there were ministers, but all of them were under the direct command of the Emperor. The Spanish inheritance war is a very good example, which essentially was a pissing contest of different houses, because they all wanted that big beautiful blotch on the map.

Because this is what happens if dumb, uneducated cunts who have not learned from history, get their hands on power.

I thought Meloni couldn't get enough of licking Trump's brown stained orange ring? What gives, why'd Italy say no to the Board of Fascists?

Are they thinking they'll try joining the winning side of a world war, from the beginning, this time?

"I remember what happened last time we tried fascism.."

-Meloni, maybe

In 1992, Meloni joined the Youth Front, the youth wing of the Italian Social Movement (MSI), a neo-fascist political party founded in 1946 by followers of Italian fascism. She later became the national leader of Student Action, the student movement of the National Alliance (AN), a post-fascist party

Some observers have described Meloni's political positions as far right,[254][255] and have highlighted her campaign appearances with Rachele Mussolini.[256]

In an interview to the French newscast Soir 3 when she was 19,[400] she praised Italian dictator Benito Mussolini as "a good politician, in that everything he did, he did for Italy",[401][402][403][404] and as the best politician of the last 50 years.[405]

After the formation of FdI in 2012, she decided to add the tricolour flame to the party flag, a neo-fascist symbol associated with the MSI, which derived its name and ideals from the RSI.[416] The tricolour flame is said to represent Mussolini's remains, where a flame is always burning on his tomb in Predappio.[417]

Press X to doubt.

Sounds like Italy only wants to do fascism on equal terms

Under Italy’s Constitution, the country can only join international organisations on equal terms with other states – a condition that Rome says is not met by the board’s current statute which gives Mr Trump extensive executive powers.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who is close to Mr Trump, said in January she had asked him to amend the terms of the Board of Peace to enable Italy to join.

How did they get around Nato always having a US commander?

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There are 3 top NATO offices, the one you are thinking of is SACEUR that is always American. He is subordinate to the currently Italian CMC who is in turn subordinate to the SecGen who is Dutch.

In practice those 2 higher offices are always European.

There can be also cases where the de jure rules are that everyone is equal while there is a de facto understanding on the split in power.

Great question, I’m curious too

The Board of Piece~ isn't an airport. You don't really have to announce your intention to go around, do you?

[–] Melchior@feddit.org 2 points 22 hours ago

They got invited. It is polite to say that you are not coming in that case.
