Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Also "accessibility" is abbreviated as "a11y" which I think is very charming.

And "two" and "too" both abbreviate to "t1o", which I feel does more to confuse the situation.

I’m sorry but that isn’t abbreviation, that’s straight up encryption

Edit: ok I was lost, I read the Wikipedia page and it makes sense now lol

i18n: 18 stands for the number of letters between the first i and the last n in the word internationalization

What psychopath invented this nonsense? I want to send them my next therapist bill.

Some psychopath that loves crosswords.

N0o one is happy about this.

Yeah this is total g7h…

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

that’s straight up encryption

If it's one-way and destructive, it's more like a hash value than encryption.

True, however when I wrote this I didn't know how it worked and I thought it was reversible :)

I should've seen that t1o could be two or too as well...

motherfucker → m10r
asshole → a5e
buttmonkey → b8y

[–] persona_non_gravitas@piefed.social 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

buttmonkey → b8y

I'd read b8y as "baby", so absolutely ❤ this. Was this intended, am I an idiot for not reading the others as anything?

Wow TIL, I have been staring at i18n for decades and never really investigated what it meant lol

haha same. I went years knowing from technical osmosis that it meant "supporting other languages" but I never knew what it represented or why it had numbers in it. There are so many acronyms in tech I think inevitably some of them fall by the wayside for everyone.

Still at a loss as to what ""Sk8er Boi" is short for.

Avril didn't make it obvious enough apparently.

[–] Corngood@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 days ago

This is actually the least stupid example of this type of abbreviation

[–] JayGray91@piefed.social 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It still fucking works wtf

My ESL brain is obliterated

I'm still working on my first one, apparently :/

There is no "Boo, hiss throws tomato" button, so have an upvote instead xD

"Skateboarding Boiler-room."

[–] mercano@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

“To” becomes “t0o,” but “too” is “t1o.”

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That would be...what, an ampliviation scheme? (since it's longer than the original word)

A4y, t2s i0s n1t p10y r6e a1d t3s m2h l4r t0o c5e.

[–] doughless@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Anyway, this is not practically readable and takes much longer to compose.

(I spent way too long trying to read this, and ended up cheating on the last word.)

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Whoa, that's very impressive! The only one you missed was "p10y," which is in fact "particularly." ("Practically" would be "p9y.") But honestly that's still amazing.

[–] Pirtatogna@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Intrnachnliseishn. Acksessibilitii. Who cares about the letters in between. In english there is no real match between a written word and how it sounds anyway. /s

[–] call_me_xale@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

This, but unironically.

If the word is understandable, screw the spelling. Descriptivists rise up!

[–] kate@lemmy.uhhoh.com 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

is this why transaction is tx?

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 days ago

Hmm, to my knowledge, tx generally means "transmit", as opposed to rx – "receive".

I don't think, there is much logic to it...
