Donald Trump received rare blowback from Republican lawmakers over a video posted to social media that included a racist image of former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, depicted as primates.

Since Trump’s return to the White House, Republican lawmakers have treaded carefully when disagreeing with the president, often communicating their concerns in private for fear of suffering his wrath.

But the swift calls to remove the post, which also echoed false conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, represented a rare moment of bipartisan backlash to Trump’s actions from lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Republicans never operate in good faith.

There is a method used here on repeat that inevitably shifts the Overton Window.

It goes like this: Trump does the racist thing, Republicans do theater around clutching their pearls. The racism is “retracted.”

However, is it? It’s still out there in the public consciousness. Now it’s normalized. Now when it happens again it’s not as shocking.

Having your cake and eating it, too.

  • Republicans in the periphery say they stood up to the president

  • Republicans at the center get to say their president is Based

Add in the national media censoring reproducing of the racist quote in mainstream press, while echoing it in talk radio. A very effective inside/outside strategy that deludes normals as it stooks up the reactionaries.

The more common response is the republicans say they haven't seen the offending video.

"I don't know I can't comment on something I haven't seen. But the president connects to the people on his social media..."

He does the same thing when he is asked about one of his allies. They will be like Mr. President what about that Nazi that said all that Nazi shit, and he will feign ignorance.

I'm certainly not shocked that Trump posted some racist shit

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"A racist post" didn't change anything. They're looking at the Republicans getting thoroughly trounced in every election and they're worried about their chances in the midterms.

This is just them taking something that isn't going to affect any policy at all and mildly complaining about it. They'll each do this with a few more non-mattering things this year, then go back to their constituents and proudly proclaim a weird mix of "See, I stood up to Trump, I'm independent, not part of the political establishment" as well as "I've been around enough to know the ropes and have connections, so you can trust me to get things done for you!"

Sadly, it'll work on the Facebook / Faux "News" crowd.

Clutch some pearls, 'think of the children'. Then keep doing what you are doing. Well that and place a few ice agents around the voting stations. And seize the voting system before hand. Looks like we won by 110%! So blessed. As a foreigner. I have 0 confidence in your government.

Fucking pathetic cowards. The entire lot of you. Actually Americans as a whole are stupid.

From a country outside of your borders: Fuck you.

As a citizen of a country that’s not crazy, you fucked up the first time you voted in this piece of shit.

You should have learned: Fuck you

Then you losers voted him in a second time: Fuck you.

Now you’re allowing facism, racism, homophobia, and the destruction of the planet for a couple of wannabe cosplay dictators to stay in power because they rape and kill young children and are destroying that constitution so hold so dear, but are ok with it being used as toilet paper and not upholding the laws written on it: Fuck you.

From the bottom of my heart: Fuck you. America is cancer.

[–] politicalincorruption@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It’s what I say about Trump and Republicans as an American that voted for Kamala. You’re not wrong, the entire country needs shook to the ground for voting in the malignant cancer.

If your country manages to remove the fascists from power in future, the leaders need to be put on trial for high treason & crimes against the people, then jailed for life or executed. Same goes for any collaborators such as the ultra rich donors and politicians who capitulated to the fascists.

After that, all MAGA cult members need to undergo deprogramming and reeducation to ensure that they are no longer an active threat to democracy. Any of those who cannot be convinced should be treated as mentally unwell and placed into asylums to protect society.

[–] stylusmobilus@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

Be careful; they’re a bit of a protected species from what I found yesterday.

I wasn’t nice either but it seems going after them can be different to them going after us and they aren’t magically going to do the right thing. There’s a couple of other options still left to exhaust.

And what country might that be? I'm curious what kind of glass house you live in while throwing stones.

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

The one that didn’t elect a life long rapist pedophile snuff film aficionado grifter who dodged the draft and has turned your country into a fascist regime.

[–] Sprocketfree@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago

Hard to confirm without you saying which one. But whatever, you seem like an annoying troll so I'm going to just block you and move on

Death to America and butter sauce

From a country outside of your borders: Fuck you.

I see you, Canada.

We all see you.

Alberta is the beating heart of your corrupt fascist oligarchy. A glorified gas station parked atop a charnel pit. You're Russians with the serial numbers filed off.

Death to Kkklanada.

May the millions of native peoples trampled by your imperial boot rise up and strangle you.

Well someone is a little upsetti spaghetti.

The only thing that tools like Scott are objecting to, is that this style of racism makes it more difficult for them to run cover for Republicans’ white supremacist project more generally.
