Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1706 readers
25 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

This person seemingly did nothing wrong apart from having a lame user handle. Suddenly they are site wide banned.

can anyone point me to why this would have occured and who can do this?

Modlog says "reason: slop spam", which means that the mod thought that this user was posting a lot of spam, of the AI-generated variety (AI-generated isn't against the rules on lemmy.world, but spam is). IDK why you thought that is has anything to do with the user name.

I dont think it should have anything to do with either the username or what they were posting.

Lemmy is very confusing this way, because this is an instance wide ban, without a 'reason', i.e. I cant see which post or comment warranted such sweeping use of instance admin power.

And in my community this shows up as if the mod removed it, but it was the instance admin (cant see which one either), and not the mod of the community.

If you post content that isn't allowed, being banned is exactly what you should expect.

While I agree this isn't great, especially for other people who just want to verify that the mods/admins aren't just powertrippin', the nature of spam posting is that you don't usually get banned because of any one post, but because you keep doing it repeatedly.

AFAIK you would get more information as a Piefed user. Seems like Lemmy is intentionally obfuscating this kind of thing, because the tankies who develop Lemmy don't like having their authority questioned.

I look at their posts. There was low effort stuff, but not AI...

And also, a side wide ban for that, even if it was true? and the admin who banned isnt even known?

I saw the posts. Pretty confident the rate and style of them at account launch was AI.

I agree with this, and blocked that account (and one other) for being a 4 hour old account churning out AI-hallmark writing at an unreasonable pace.

I’m never sure whether I should report these, since it’s 90% vibes-based.

The comment I saw “mod removed” certainly wasn’t.
