Privacy has become a very important issue in modern society, with companies and governments constantly abusing their power, more and more people are waking up to the importance of digital privacy.
In this community everyone is welcome to post links and discuss topics related to privacy.

I like the idea of this. It think 100% of Americans in their right minds should agree with it…
My issue is how do we expect this to be adopted let alone be enforced? Like, this is cool, but is it going to do anything? Or are Dems just throwing this out there so they can keep saying, “See!? We’re still better than those guys!” While still taking it up the ass from the GOP?
And do I, a Lemmy user, have all the answers in how to change things? I don’t think I personally do. But we’ve seen Dems start to fight back and fold already. Just look at your health insurance premiums. Remember that lock-out? Look at this most recent “shutdown” that lasted like 24 hours.
Yeah I mean this is the most left-leaning of the democrats in congress putting this forward, so the rest of them need pressure to make this go anywhere, perhaps along with whoever else might be amenable. Play the longer game: maybe it'll be more viable after the midterm elections, but the pressure campaign will need to ramp up between now and then.
primaries are coming up my rep consistantly voted no on the ice appropriations so they will get a vote from me but everyone should check. We have an open senate seat and two of the canidates are current house members and one crossed the aisle on ice appropriations. There is one canidate that has state experience but the one who voted against the appropriations is who is getting my vote unless I learn something more.
Midterms?
Ever since we started seeing traffic cameras showing up at intersections 15 or 20 years ago and recording license plates, I've had an uneasy feeling that these data pools just become a tool to move against people at any time in the future.
I'm not opposed to enforcement of rules. I want there to be rules in society and it's important that we have resources dedicated to the enforcement of rules.
What I don't want is a goliath unfair advantage that can be easily used to hurt people - even inadvertently - by ill-trained or malicious authorities.
The government has unlimited resources to prosecute people and destroy lives through the process. And it's extremely expensive for people to defend themselves, even when falsely accused. The risk to everyday people, many who are following the laws, is just too high.
And if the wind blows towards fascist tendencies, that pool of data on you just became your worst nightmare.
The Fourth amendment was created in response to abuses by British authorities. At one point we wanted to protect individual privacy and property rights from government overreach.
Americans are not free if they are being detained for "probable cause" because some database + opaque lines of code said there is probable cause.
Missed opportunity to call it OoOFTA. Ice out of our faces today act.
How about ban them for the rest of the government too
