These votes demonstrate that the Democratic Party functions not as an opposition but as an enabler of the Trump administration. Its priority is to ensure the uninterrupted funding of the US military while diverting popular opposition with calls for meaningless cosmetic changes to the administration’s efforts to establish a presidential dictatorship.

Twenty-one Republicans—primarily from the fascistic House Freedom Caucus—voted against the bill. The Democrats responded by supplying the exact number of votes needed to offset Republican defections.

Were the Republicans just unwilling to accept the reduced ICE budget, or actually against it?

Irrelevant when the Democrats give them the votes regardless. America, lost in 2 terms. They said it couldn't be done

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 3 points 2 months ago

America has been coming into its final form ever since Jerry Falwell successfully melded religion and politics. That gave you Reagan, Trump, and everything that comes after.

It doesn't matter anymore

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

People are reading this backwards. This bill funds the gov and military through September, but cuts ICE and CBP in 2 weeks.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 38 points 2 months ago (7 children)

I really don't understand how this can be viewed as anything other than a win.

Necessary social programs, including taxing and auditing the rich, are getting funded through September while the entire DHS runs out in 2 weeks. That's fantastic. That's the best fucking news I've heard since before the second Trump term began.

[–] DaMummy@hilariouschaos.com 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

While Trump is building concentration camps throughout the country for people to spend their whole life in! It's so thoughtful of him to not only have a jobs program to build them, but to also house people! Let's hope he also puts signs above the warehouses with something like "Work will set you free"

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 7 points 2 months ago

That's exactly what loses all funding in 2 weeks as a result of this bill.

Wsws.org is one of those sites it's really hard to take seriously, and their articles that do get boosted here are still the sanest takes from the website.

It's basically rage bait, it's hard to believe their writers can consistently misinterprete so much

Because the priority right now isn't social programs and funding for shit Trump will just cut when the GOP gains unopposed power and eliminates democracy FFS. Getting a cookie by funding the elimination of democracy and the dissolution of rights isn't a fucking win.

You have to ask yourself, "What would Leon Trotsky think of this?" Then you'll understand where the Worldwide Socialist Web Site is coming from.

You can peruse their Marxist library if you need more ideas.

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Sadly, Dems will cave and pass funding for DHS with extremely little or even zero changes.

Even if by some miracle they get "promises" to make changes to DHS, ICE, etc. There will not be any follow through.

[–] whereIsTamara@lemmy.org 0 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Lmfao DHS will not run out of money. Remember when a private donor gave $130m to the military to cover wages? Yeah, that will happen again.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (8 children)

DHS got 75 billion to spend over the next decade in the BBB already...

The funding bill that just passed covers most of the government till September, but DHS just till end of next week, like 10 days.

They're not gonna run out of money, but they have to burn that 75 billion down while all the good shit that wouldn't have gotten any money gets funded.

Like, if you're not happy with this, what would it have taken?

130M is fucking nothing. The "Big Beautiful Bill" that the GOP passed previously via VP tiebreaker and house reconciliation gave the DHS 85 Billion dollars. It's going from $85,000,000,000 that they've already spent down to $0.

In theory, the GOP could do another similar bill with reconciliation, but why they haven't is unclear and any DNC resistance would be futile.

Good cop and bad cop, but both cops. Build an opposing faction within the DNC that refuses to cooperate with establishment dems. Take the party over.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 2 months ago

Yep, it's like having one manager at work who is really cool, and makes it easier to work, and another manager is a screaming tyrant who makes every moment at work horrific.

We'd all rather work for the nice boss, but make no mistake, they both have the same corporate objectives, just different ways of accomplishing it.

Both parties are just lackeys for the Sociopathic Oligarchs.

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This wouldn't work, the establishment has too many systems in place that would prevent this. We need to think outside of the system.

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

The entire election system prevents third parties. MAGA took over the gop so it can absolutely happen. They aren't all genius political actors they are fallible, have vulnerabilities and can be out maneuvered by a large enough politically active base.

[–] ClassStruggle@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The difference is that MAGA isnt a threat to the status quo, if anything they are reinforcing the systems to protect it

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes it was. Status quo wasn't fascism with Trump a dictator.

Yes, that's why I said you need to think outside the system. You cannot reform the Democrats, and you cannot reform the US electoral system. Revolution is absolutely mandatory for people to live free.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 2 months ago

Cancel the dnc and rnc.

[–] EmpireInDecay@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Reform is a surefire failure

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

Then explain MAGA taking over the GOP. If the status quo can't change, how could it change for them? This defeatism is useless and projection of your own sense of powerlessness.

[–] ClassStruggle@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They are reinforcing the systems that protect the status quo

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

What's happening isn't the status quo.

Schumer and Jeffries are controlled opposition: There's no reasonable explanation for their actions.

[–] EmpireInDecay@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

How the tide has turned, a year ago this post would have had 100 downvotes by now with defenders of blue fascism foaming at the mouth defending their party and their actions. Better late than never.

The worst part about being leftist is always being right too early.
