Just a community for everyone to share artifacts, reconstructions, or replicas for the historically-inclined to admire!

Generally, an artifact should be 100+ years old, but this is a flexible requirement if you find something rare and suitably linked to an era of history, not a strict rule. Anything over 100 is fair game regardless of rarity.

A taiaha is more like a two-handed club. The sharp end isn't sharp enough to penetrate skin, but is used for powerful thrusting attacks.

Heh, in a comm where some objects are legitimately older than that epoch marker, it helps to make the distinction.

That’s so nicely crafted. Wonder if it was ceremonial rather than functional.

Functional. It's called a taiaha and is not thrown like a spear it's used more like a staff.

Are they all decorated that nicely?

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 2 points 2 months ago

Every one that I've even seen, yeah.

The decorations are also functional! The loose/dangling parts distract the eye, carvings are often a representation of the genealogy of the owner, or of the item itself.
