THE POLICE PROBLEM

4373 readers
1181 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

Start arming yourself, every ICE agent is a threat to you.

Walz in his address told people go out and observe and video ICE and this dude was murdered for it. It is long past time for not only the governors of the states to do something and the city and county elect officials as well. I can see this exploding over night and this getting much worse. It is time for the people to step in and do the job of our elected officials if they are unwilling to do it.

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 12 points 10 hours ago

At some point, we just need to say, "if you want a civil war, you shall have one."

[–] areakode@riskeratspizza.com 68 points 13 hours ago (13 children)

Won't be long before we start shooting back. Why not, if they're going to kill you anyway.

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 42 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

This is what I don't think they realize. There's only a certain point to which you can escalate violence before retaliatory violence becomes the norm.

For example, if you're in a warzone, and you know the other side has been instructed to "kill and leave no survivors," you're never going to just lie down and take it, you're going to fight them back, because it's die if you do, die if you don't.

If this keeps up, there will be a point where ICE killings are so expected, that anyone in their path will take any means necessary to kill those ICE officers first.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 43 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

They fucking realize. It's the goal, that's the only explanation. They want an excuse to roll out their tanks and APCs and start mass executions.

[–] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 40 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I've seen people saying this a lot, but the subtext seems to have been overlooked. They're going to do it anyway, they don't need an excuse, they're cops, and they'll simply manufacture a reason to escalate if people don't give them one.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 10 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I think the important thing here is to allow them to manufacture that reason so everyone on the world stage (and the rest of the country) can clearly see it's bullshit. Then it's game on.

Bullies push and push and push because they want you to take the first swing, then claim you started it.

[–] Gerblat@lemmy.world 15 points 10 hours ago

So while we wait for them to manufacture that, we let them keep murdering us? Fuck outta here.

Most bullies are cowards who will retreat when their victim fights back. You see most of those ICE shitstains scatter like roaches when the shots rang out? They’re cowards, 95% of them

Show up alone, you get arrested. Show up with 100 people, you get shot. We need to show up with 100,000+ people.

Organize! Join an organization! DSA, PSL, something anything!

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 16 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I keep seeing this promised. But more Charlie Kirks have died than ICE agents, to date.

I will continue to post this every time someone insinuates that someone else should murder Trump/ICE Agents/ etc. Instead, please focus on protecting you and yours.

In the US we have the Second Amendment. The fascists have been the ones screaming and yelling about the Second Amendment, but the truth is that all Americans have the right.

Owning a gun isn't enough. Driving to Cabela's and picking up a vermin killing .22 is not enough. You should buy a proper rifle, a pistol, and a knife or baton. (Bonus points for a shotgun) Then you need to train with said rifle, pistol and knife/baton. Go to a range and shoot. Look for local self defense/hand to hand combat with a weapon classes and train.

I am not advocating for violence...far from it. But I am advocating for knowledge because owning a weapon and not knowing how to use it is a recipe for disaster.

PS: If you can afford it, buy suppressors. Especially for your rifles. Suppression for the common citizen isn't about stealth like in the movies, it is about protecting your hearing. Guns are LOUD. Much louder than you expect.

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

It's worth mentioning also that if you routinely use / possess drugs, you are legally barred from owning a firearm.

Important point there: A firearm.

A Zeus .72 Air Rifle will put a hole through anything and is not legally considered a firearm. I'd rather have an actual rifle if given the choice, but not everyone is given that choice.

[–] BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I'd like to add: get something that you can afford to train with. A riffle in some exotic caliber may seem really cool, but if firing 100 rounds ruins you, then you're not going to train enough.

IDK about ammo prices in the US, but I'd get a riffle chambered in .223rem or .308win, because it's the civilian version of the NATO 5.56 and 7.62, meaning ammunition is easier to acquire and potentially cheaper. I guess a handgun should be 9mm or .45 if following the same principle.

[–] TaterTurnipTulip@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I would actually suggest getting a rifle in 5.56. The pressures are a bit higher than .223. You can shoot .223 out of a rifle rated for 5.56, but not the other way around.

Hearing protection is an absolute necessity, especially when training. Eye protection too. In the field, PPE is much less practical.

This is what happens when the system fails to enforce the rule of law. The armed thugs have seen that they can get away with murder. They won't stop murdering now.

How many more must they murder before people start shooting back?

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 33 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Jesus Christ, he was on the ground. How was he possibly a threat to them?

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 28 points 12 hours ago (1 children)
  • "he was reaching for the officer's handgun"
  • "he was resisting arrest"
  • "he was assaulting an officer"
  • "we thought he had a gun on him"

I'm waiting to see how the administration will spin this one. Obviously the MAGATs will just say "he shouldn't have resisted arrest and he'd be fine right now" for sure, though.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 31 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

With this many agents wrestling him he could have had as many guns as you can fit on him, shooting him would still not have been justified. They had way more people that would have been required to have one guy controlling each limb for crying out loud. The dumbass who shot him has put the other officer's lives in danger far more than the guy ever could at that point. And even if you could justify the shooting, the last 5 rounds the officer pumped into the guy while he was laying flat on his back absolutely weren't.

[–] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 6 points 10 hours ago

yeah anyway someone pointed out that the gun was taken before the execution

and the pink lady video proves it, but for sure they'll just lie as they always do without shame

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 11 hours ago

So. 7 vs 1. And they were not able to restrain him. And then one of the 7, who was closest and on his knees, thought he might as well shoot him.

  1. 7 vs 1
  2. 6 people plus bystanders close by. Stupid to shoot in a situation like that. Unfortunately he did not hit another ICE baby
  3. he had no overview over the situation

Please start shooting them on sight. In is the only thing that helps. This here was another murder.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 9 hours ago

Jesus fucking Christ

[–] Ghostwurm@lemmy.ca 22 points 12 hours ago

And that one hitting him in the head with the side of his gun while he's being held down....

[–] Montagge@lemmy.zip 22 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Why would they stop? Because of a witty sign? Because everyone chanted Ice out? Because protests that happen for one day within the permitted area?

[–] diabetic_porcupine@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Hey you’re right! It’s time we protested for a second day. And maybe think about stepping slightly outside of the designated area.

How many more deaths will it take for americans to do something???

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 9 points 12 hours ago

Did pistol whipping guy shoot him with an accidental pop?

The discipline of these guys is fucking awful, and that’s the best case scenario.

But it looks like they put him on his knees then executed him point blank.

[–] kikutwo@lemmy.world 13 points 13 hours ago

They back off as if it started shooting itself?

[–] thoro@lemmy.ml 9 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

I saw someone post below that they're saying the guy was armed.

Now, it's hard to tell what's going on exactly in this video, but it looks like the guy in the grey jacket pulls a weapon from the victim's waistband before a shot is fired. The man in grey then runs out of frame with what appears to be a gun in his hand.

If that was the victim's weapon, then it was taken before he was shot and didn't look like he was reaching for it in the first place.

This might be baseless from me. I just was watching the video over and over to try to get a sense of what happened.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 13 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

This video is too obscured to tell exactly what happened, but I can say with certainty a man with 6 agents piled on him is not a life threatening situation under any circumstance.

We need the closer footage from pink coat, but I read she may be arrested and missing.

Edit - her footage is out
