I enjoyed the "Gaunt's Ghosts" series (Dan Abnett, iirc).

Yes indeed, also by Abnett is the Eisenhorn and Ravenhorn series. He also had a few one offs.
I also quite like the Cyphas Cain books
Oh Infinite and the Divine for sure
I quite enjoyed the high kahl's oath, except the ending which is very adrupt and kind of sucks. It feels a little like they cut the book 100 pages short...actually, I don't recommend kt
Finally a book for space dwarfs.
I strongly recommend the Ciaphas Cain series by Sandy Mitchell. It's more Blackadder in Space, but imo aside from the few Ork books I've read, it's probably the most inline with the core satire of the 40K setting.
My favorites have been mostly the chaos marine stories as Ive found they have some of the most interesting characters.
The nightlords omnibus is incredible, all the characters in it are memorable, it has great battles, including naval battles, and a lot of dark humor throughout. The dialogue between characters Is also believable written.
The ahriman series and the fabius bile series are also a lot of fun. Both have awesome characters (of which where should be more models of!).
For 1 off books, lords of silence was definitely up there in the rankings for me, as well as lords of the night.
Finally for a not chaos book, The infinite and the Divine is a riot of a comedy about Trazyn the infinite and his arch rival.
OK... I'll be the one: It's not 40K, but 30K, but I really enjoyed most of the Horus Heresy books I've read so far (just started 15 this week). There are really good ones and some that are quite mediocre, but each has been interesting and they show the conflict from different sides and factions, too.
Somehow not shown up here yet, but Twice Dead King: Ruin is a fantastic Necron book. Not the comedy that Infinite and the Divine is, but focuses on the stagnation and rot the race faces.
Dante and Devastation of Baal are really good.
Last chancers stuff. Gaunts ghosts Double Eagle (air combat stuff)
Various omnibus': soul drinkers Inquisiton war Grey knights Ahriman Forges of Mars Etc.
