idk about the booing or the spitting but umm... bring it or buy a new one.

Can we agree that Infinity free plastic bags is a bad idea?

"Infinity" isn't a rational metric, but the short answer is it's complicated. I'd argue that just using the free plastic bags and taking them to a single stream recycler (several grocery stores have collection bins) is a better idea than buying a new reusable bag every time you forget yours at home.

Obviously the best thing you can do is have just enough reusable bags for your shopping needs and use them every time, but that doesn't erase the impact of reusable bags.

it's a bad idea, because me buying specific refuse bags made of the same plastic is much better than using the free ones I get with my shopping.

I have a pretty good system going for this. I have a trash bag, a packaging material bag and a deposit bottles bag, all used shopping bags

I also have a paper and cardboard bag, but that's a used paper bag.

So I'm actually using every bag at least twice and the final use is recycling other stuff

I don't have the emotional energy to have a civilized conversation rn. sorry.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, it depends on the size of the trashcan.

Is 5c per bag really going to break the bank? You can still buy them, but it de-incentivizes all those other people who were littering them.

Is 5c per bag really going to break the bank?

it's the principle of the matter, I used to get it for free and get an important use out of it. (side note : yes, important. If you don't think refuse storage and disposal is important, look into garbage men strikes and how much it impacts sanitation in the region where it takes place)

but it de-incentivizes all those other people who were littering them.

Fucking tragedy of the commons strikes again, fuck regular people, this is why I'm a misanthrope, etc etc

I'm sorry it feels bad to have to pay for them now, but I truly think this is better for society.

I’m a fan of the European model where if you don’t have your own bags, you can add paper bags to the order for a small price each. Aldi and Lidl do that in the US but I can never find what I want at those stores.

State law in CA iirc

~10 ¢ a bag

Or you pack stuff in your backpack while the line of onlookers loses their mind because of the added 3.6 seconds they have to wait.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As a brown person in the USA, I feel that the racists would think I'm stealing if I wore a backpack in a store

The apartheid in Ameristan is no joke.

That obvious? Damn.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's why I prefer the self-checkout. Most people never use those, it's great.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

Wasn't an option while I lived there.

[–] RockBottom@feddit.org 7 points 3 days ago
