Fucker namedropping Thucydides and Vaclav Havel... I already liked Carney. Now I respect him.
"Nostalgia is not a strategy."

This is one of those speeches that's going to be a thing people study and read deep into, because it perfectly captures this moment in history and the generalized sentiment of the massive shift in the world today.
Its huge and he said what everyone's thinking. But i think the reason people werent saying it was because they dont believe the second part of his statement. I think they dont believe we(democratic countries) CAN build a new democratic rules based order.
Fingers crossed that the US gets a sane leader in soon. Mentally I'm thinking the biggest problem democratic countries need to solve is a way to insulate against information warfare and manipulated narratives.

The world needs to try. Declaring failure before we even start is not the way to approach this. You want to proceed with caution, I understand, but you must also proceed in good faith. And that means not entering into a democratic world order with suspicion of every country that isn't white, Western and liberal. The world is a large, diverse place. There are a lot of different cultures, ethnicities and political systems. To limit participation in a democratic world order to only Western style liberal democracies means excluding most of the world. How can we ever hope to have a democratic, rules based world order if most of the world isn't allowed to participate?
Now its said aloud - now what? On thiis very moment there would be momentum to actually accomplish things, but as trump always chickens out, the momentum will mellow out unless things are done now.
Boot hungary off the EU and take Canada into the bloc. Create EU armed forces and simplify/unify taxation across the EU. EU should be more united than now.
Where things go wrong are when bigger EU nations have their own interests come into play to fuck it up for the rest of us. Like Germany swallowing everything coming from the US (because of car exports) or from Russia (because of gas import). There are challenges, but for 20 years I dont think EU has accomplished much in practical sense but more regulation upon regulation. I dont think that's a winner strategy.
The EU has some important things that it needs to get sorted out, for sure, but the rest of the world can't wait on the EU to start building the new world order. In fact, it's happening whether anyone likes it or not.
