I'm not loving how childish the students act. Most are sulking and barely seem to want to be there. They act like sullen middle schoolers and not the 21yo best of the best competing. The tonal shifts are jarring, from the main character being bratty and whining and then there's explosions and violence.

The tonal shifts are really rough. Jarring is right. I feel like I need to watch the first episode again because they'd jump from one baffling thing to another. Why is Starfleet ripping a child away from a mother? Why is there no councilor? Why is the captain/headmaster now trying to play mom to this kid??? Oh wait emotional scene over now it's your first day at school young man! What wacky characters will you meet? There's for some reason a hologram child?? Sure she's an autistic person analog but why not make her that and instead a hologram? To what end? Don't think too hard, we're back to violence!! Violence with some flat dull jokes! Slapstick!
Argh. Exhausting.
Well said.
I kinda saw that as just there young and not experienced yet. Also it's the first time the academy has been made for a long long time so the strictness of it all I would think wouldn't have been as high before the burn happened. But I didn't really pay attention to that. Can't get into the drama type stuff. But valid point though
I do like that the main older female has a normal face and not full of filler and Botox.
Who knew that would become rare?
God I miss forehead wrinkles on actors.
Not to mention, Holly Hunter has been taking good care of herself.

She has a very interesting physique for sure, she is short but has the arm length that hangs a little low like how it does in tall people
Yep. The stone faced psychopath look, quite unbecoming.
Love the ageing gracefully.
And how many hundred years old does she need to be to get those wrinkles?
And medicine regressed such that she needs glasses??

Business aside, I'm enjoying it so far. There is some cringy school drama, but that's to be expected. Looking forward to see where things go.
the diversity and acceptance of people in the academy is just uplifting.
That would have been weird if Star Trek stopped doing diversity and acceptance, as it has done as a defining characteristic of it since it started. ... Oh wait, but, quite the opposite of uplifting, the bullying and lack of acceptance, largely because of diversity, did seem to happen. How weird.
Glasses
So, is she allergic to Retinax too?
No weird fucking dumb drama
I don't think we were watching the same thing.
episodes that have beginner middle and end.
Did you mean "beginning"?
High praise indeed... stories follow the structure of stories. Heh.
and of course the doctor singing opera
Seemed like a contrived shallow desperate ploy to make it likeable.
But this one hits all the good I loved in the 1990s series.
90s trek being my favourite era of Star Trek too, I did not see that at all. No resemblance at all to anything good as far as I could see. Quite the contrary. An painful offensive affront, densely, consistently, throughout.
We must have been watching different things.
