Do Californians want to be bought by Denmark? Then that's just feeding into Trump's idea of buying Greenland, because they supposedly want it. Do Californians not want to be bought by Denmark? Then that's feeding into Denmark being worse than the US.
Never mind the fact that this is make-believe nonsense that is totally detached from Denmark's actual ability to buy California.
Tbf if I learned California was going to be part of Denmark next week I'd be on the road to California tomorrow
Denmark isn't great but it's better than the US
Whichever country is better still fits the underlying premise, that the best country should be the one that rules the colony.
No it doesn't because greenlanders don't want to be bought and every single poll is going to bear that out, while Californians might actually go for this, at least in the abstract. The universal healthcare is a massive jump up in quality of living whereas Greenland under US rule is a massive dripping whatever QOL they have.
Also, the US isn't asking to buy Greenland, they're pretending they'd buy it and then are just going to take it and then not pay anyone anything.
California is rich enough to afford our own universal healthcare system. If we wanted to be distinct from the US, we could "just" secede and still have a massive economy and also have universal healthcare.

One proposal for how the US could buy Greenland is direct cash deposits to every person in Greenland, basically buying their loyalty. Now obviously it's all bullshit, the US just steals and kills to get what it wants, but let's entertain this idea.
If the US paid each person in Greenland enough to get a majority onboard, would that actually be acceptable?
Yeah? Unless you think you know better than them. Or that they shouldn't be allowed to receive money compensation. I assume most of them are smart enough to know how short the money will go.

My point is that it's in contradiction with the intention of the joke, which is clearly meant to say the opposite.

My point is that the punchline of the joke is in contradiction with the presumed intention of the joke. The joke just kind of feeds into Trump's intentions, rather than poking fun at it.
They're incapable of shame and allergic to doing anything meaningful. I on the other hand am extremely capable of shame and merely too depressed and lazy to do anything meaningful.

Being a territory of Denmark sounds lovely for Californians until they find out about the sterilisation policy.
And then think it's horrible until they realise that that was ended literally fifty years ago and today's representatives have apologised for the country's wrongdoing. I bet the same thing can be said about the stuff the US did fifty years ago, right? Right?
It's not like colonial persecution magically stopped with the ending of the sterilisation policy. They've been carrying out control of the population through other methods like taking children away from mothers for "humane" reasons. This continues to this day, even having significant media coverage over large (for greenland) protests.
Ultimately it's an occupied territory without sovereignty governed by a foreign colonial power. That comes with all the same problems as colonialism performed by any other European colonial state historically. They've all been evil, and are still evil. Greenland deserves real independence and to be controlled by its indigenous population.
